I actually liked that things seemed to come easily to her. It does show that she puts a lot of effort into stuff like learning to keep house, and I really liked the subtle psychological aspects of the story. I just really appreciated the fact that she was this super practical and competent young female protagonist whose managed to solve the problems that came her way without a big fuss or running to other people for help. You don't see a lot of books like that for girls. It was kind of a wish fulfillment fantasy I can admit, but there are hella wish fulfillment fantasy stories out there on various topics and I like that there's one where the wish fulfillment fantasy is of a preteen girl who learns to manage and understand herself and other people and take on whatever difficulties come her way as well as helping other people solve their own problems. I didn't read this one till I was an adult and I think it would have been really inspirational to me if I'd found it when I was Jane's age, because I struggled a lot when I was younger with feeling like I couldn't manage everyday stuff and I would have liked to have a fictional heroine who showed that managing everyday stuff can be done and maybe it isn't so hard after all.

I still think a lot of things came a little too easy for her given her background, age and situation and I don't think there's anything wrong with letting young girls know that it's okay to ask for help when you're stuck or something is above your pay grade, so to speak. But you make a good point about wish fulfillment stories in general.

I'm not sure I would've liked it as a kid because even then, because I knew full well that it's not that easy and the book doesn't give Jane much of a learning curve. I think more problem-solving and learning how to be confident (vs. just being magically confident overnight) is arguably an even more helpful message without losing the wish fulfillment aspect.
