Re: Sort of based on 8

I had a friend swear up and down to me that I would love SPN because I used to be head over heels for The X-Files. And I'd heard some good stuff, so I was pretty excited!

I loathed it. We marathoned it from the start, and she kept saying "no no it gets better, just hold on a bit longer, the first couple of seasons are pretty rough", which-- fair! The X-Files took a bit to find its feet too! But halfway through S6 I still hated everything about it, so I finally had to tap the fuck out. She was really mad, but like... damn, man.

Oh, wow. I'm an X-Files fan from way back and I've watched half a season of Supernatural. Sometimes there's a similar feel in terms of cinematography and angles and there's an overlap of writers, directors/producers and actors but they're really not the same kind of show. The supernatural aspects of SPN are very monster of the week lite.

See, I can't understand the whole... being mad at someone because they don't like something you like. And to be fair, watching six seasons of something for a friend is pretty much above and beyond the call of duty of friendship imo, my dude.

You endured six seasons???
Christ, you must have really liked that friend

Really, they said that? Most people think that the first three (or five) seasons are the best and then it gets worse. You could have given up way sooner than S6.

Yeah I actually like the first few seasons, but like OP I don't think I've ever made it past season six and I've tried twice now. I feel like when they started bringing god and angels into it it just got so convoluted.

I liked it when it was more 'monster of the week' style.

Yeah, that jumped out at me too. The first few seasons are the best. It starts getting convoluted and bogged down when the angels take over.

Hah. I was thinking about how much I loved the X-Files back in the 90s/00s, but if I had to go back to marathon it (or even the new one), I don't think I would be able to stand it.

I'm told SPN would be right up my alley, but I think my tastes have changed over the years and I'm not so confident about the recommendation.

It's weird that your friend got mad at you for tolerating six seasons of a TV show before dumping it. I tried to get a friend into Supernatural, but she gave up on it halfway through season one because it wasn't her thing and I thought she gave it a fair shot.
