I wouldn't call River Tam snarky, sassy, or overly aggressive. Yes, she was kick-ass but only when threatened. She was, rather: incredibly, incredibly intelligent, very very sensitive, an amazing dancer, and tragically damaged by life. Fight me on River.

I took the secret to mean that OP thinks Whedon also writes about fairly specific types for his female characters, not that his type is exactly like Moffat's type.

pretty sure River in dicussion here is Moffat's River Song

that said, I love River and I also love Echo even though most people who still defend Whedon hate Dollhouse, but....damn, like

he sure does love his SuperWaifs

none of these characters is bad in themselves but when really influential voices are holding them up as the Best or even Only way to be a Strong Woman over and over, and also when they're never actually allowed agency and are always defending or dying for or obsessed with the men heroes, it's...icky and unfortunate

The OP mentioned Joss, that was why I brought up Tam. I thought River had plenty of agency -- it was the rest of the crew who didn't realize just how much. They underestimated her because of her mental illness. It's one of the reasons I adore her so much.

But yeah, I'm with you the superwaif problem. I loved Echo too.

Anyway. Was really just kidding about the fight me thing. I don't like arguing online. (:

Exactly. I think it's more ubiquitous in Whedon's work, but then I haven't seen everything Steven Moffat has done so I'm willing to let others identify whether or not it's a recurring pattern.
