Re: Advice

I've decided not to spend Christmastime with my family and only join them later during the holidays, and need to break the news to my parents.
Should I be brutally honest, fuck that shit, I've told you year after year that you people as a crowd are too freaking loud, I can't stand children even my nephews and certainly not my bratty teenaged cousin, the holiday season and its mandatory happiness is just too stressful, hey don't you remember the arguments you went through before and during the party last year?
Should I go into a convulted and sugar coated explanation on how I have other plans and travelling to and fro across two countries in the same week is too taxing and too complicated?
Should I outright lie, pretend the day before Christmas that oops I got an awful stomach bug and I'll join you in a few days when I'm better?

Tell anyone that you consistently trust to be reasonable and mature the actual truth.

For anyone else, make up an external logistical reason that makes it absolutely impossible for you to do it the way that they want you to. Not a stomach bug, it's too last-minute, but something like work or car trouble or plane tickets, things like that.

That's what I would do, anyway.

Don't give elaborate explanations or make excuses, or as some internet circles say, don't JADE. (Justify, Argue, Defend, Explain) It seems like a good idea (to help people understand where you're coming from!) but when you're dealing with people who are likely to be unreasonable, all it does is make them think this is up for debate and they'll argue with you. Keep it low key, and tell them like it's a done deal. Keep answers short and vague and uninformative.

"This year, I'll be coming back December 30th. See you then!"

"I'm trying something different this year."

"This is what works for me."

If they get shitty about it, exit the conversation. "Okay, well, got to go. See you all after Christmas!"

"I'm going to have a quiet Christmas this year. Are you around on (date) to catch up?"

You're an adult. You do what you want with your Christmas.

I don't know above nonnie's family but this sounds good to me.

That's very good advice if OP's family is emotionally mature and not conflict-prone. But a lot of families are conflict-prone and it's useful and prudent to try to manage that.

I wish I knew your relationship to your family enough to properly comment, but honestly, just be honest. Leave little hints here and there as maybe a warning of what you're about to break to them. Obviously, it seems they don't see missing Christmas as much as of an option, so I'd begin with casual questions about the subject, who might be there, is so and so really going to come. It might convey your feelings a little bit before you drop the bomb... Make sure to bring up your unhappiness about attending while beating around the subject. If they don't like it, remind them of how often you felt uncomfortable attending... etc, etc, etc...

Otherwise, straight up tell them you aren't gonna go;;
