Probably a bunch of young voters who decided not to vote again. Honestly, at this point they deserve to get screwed over. If they are not going to vote, I hope their lives get fucked over. Maybe they'll vote in two years!

Could also be the 6 million Obama voters the left has probably lost for good...

Not American, but from what I've seen on Twitter, poll turnouts are record-setting in most places, so I doubt you can just blame it on all the 'stupid young people'.

Everyone is calling it for the Democrats taking the house (and Republicans keeping the Senate, but that was kind of expected)

I don't know if young people are voting now or not, but hearing how they tend not to makes me think back to high school when a bunch of my friends and classmates would whine about how the voting age should be lowered to 16... and I laugh. Chances are, most 16 year-olds wouldn't vote.

there's a whole subgroup of people who are totally disenfranchised. they think that their vote doesn't matter or that the entire system is corrupt so "why bother?" and i've heard this excuse from people who definitely aren't millennials.

Really? You hope people's lives get fucked over? Because you were so perfect and informed and motivated at that age, and the ones before you never handed you a shit sandwich and always explained the importance of being involved in things that affect the future?

Try learning some basic empathy. It might do you some good.

I thought things went down mostly as expected with Dems winning the House and Repubs keeping the Senate. And the last time I saw so many yoing voters was in 2004 trying to get rid of Bush no. 2. I live across the street from my polling place and work at another and it was nonstop nuts all day. Youth turnout was way up.

It went exactly how it was expected to go. People are just really deeply committed to the idea that the Democrats are losing because they're opposed to racism or because millenials or whatever. It's an article of faith.

I think people also overestimated the "Blue Wave" as well. Most states are gerrymandered so that Democratic turnout had to be very high to flip seats, and Trump did a very good (albeit nakedly racist and completely repugnant) job stoking fear in order to motivate Republicans to vote.

People got their hopes up because they always do. That's how people work.

The reality is that it was a really good election for Democrats by every reasonable marker. The fact that they didn't win literally every race doesn't change that. It was a blue wave; it just wasn't a total repudiation and rejection of the Republican Party. Democrats should be celebrating.

Exactly. There won't be a total rejection of the Republican Party until more of the old racist bigots die off and more young people become old enough to vote because it's a simple matter of numbers.

What people actually wanted to prove in the election was that we don't live in a country full of fascists. And that's something the election could never have proven, because we do.

But what we did prove is that fascists are in a considerable minority.
