Yeah, it's not my favorite trope, either. I like seeing characters conflicted, but this is just so common...

Same.

This is part of why I couldn't get into Simon or Simon/Kieran on In the Flesh. A few days after Simon meets Kieran suddenly Kieran is the most important thing in the world to him and he's willing to get rid of all his ideals for him. It was a very popular ship and heaven knows we need more canon m/m ships but I just didn't like it.

I mean, Simon genuinely thought Kieren was a religious icon, so it sort of makes sense in that situation. I couldn't get into the ship for other reasons (namely Simon seems super interested in Kieren but only because he thinks Kieren is the First Risen, and Kieren doesn't seem interested back).

I had to stop watching Bodyguard exactly because of this.

If there had been an attraction, but they hadn't acted on it or even just declared the first time a mistake that only happened because of the circumstances and that wasn't going to be repeated, that would have been fine. But no, so after the end of the second episode, I stopped watching.

The Night Manager I was more okay with since Pine wasn't a professional and though he was passing along information, he wasn't recruited until after he'd met Jed (and been obviously attracted).

A trope adjacent that I absolutely hate is one character meets another, bang, and suddenly they will betray family, friends, all morals for new bang buddy. Like, really?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-08 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I hate it too! Especially when "how can I be with this person *without* compromising my morals or endangering others" is a much more interesting plot!

(Anonymous) 2018-11-08 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, can't say that I'm a fan of that trope either.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I eyeroll so hard when a character doesn't give a shit about anything or anyone except their One True Love who is often just Closest Available Sexual Parter or a Ridiculous Fantasy Partner.

Nah, you're wrong (not to have this dislike, feel free to nope out at any time; we all have our squicks, but). It added just the right dose of unpredictability and wtf to The Bodyguard. Without the obvious fuck-ups, there wouldn't be a story; there wouldn't have been anything to hide and no nerve throughout.
