This is all true. And yet I still like her.

Her powers look cool, her movie background interests me (what can I say, I like hurt/comfort and redemption arcs), the actress is awesome and does a good deal with the admittedly small amount she's been given.

Same. I like the actress, i like the character. And in the comics, she can literally change the entire universe. They can't actually have a character with that much power without making it stupid (why don't they just change everything?), or totally fucking it up.

I think for a character to have a redemption arc they have to actually acknowledge they did something wrong. "Yes I volunteered for HYDRA for years and years but don't worry I'm totes on your side now!" doesn't quite cut it, imho.

What i get from her arc is "oh god, I didn't know I was working for the bad guys, going to do whatever I can to make it up to you and the world." Which, to me, is a legit redemption arc.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-08 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you get that?

Because that's literally what happened? She saw into Ultron's mind and realized the truth. She's spent her time since trying to make up for it. Then she caused deaths again when her powers messed up. So more guilt is piled on her.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-08 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
But what does she actually do to change? She accidentally kills a bunch of people, gets put under house arrest, puts her boyfriend through the floor and fucks off because 'I can't control other people's fears (or, apparently, my own destructive impulses)'. That doesn't show a lot of remorse to me.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-08 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
she realized she was gonna die too in his grand plan

there was never any remorse as far as I could tell for releasing the hulk on a densely populated area out of sheer ego/spite

also I'm not sure how turning against *Ultron* has anything to do with volunteering for hydra for revenge

there could have been an interesting dynamic between her and tony reconciling mutual severe fuckups and culpability as she became part of the team but the movies never.......bothered

I know we're told that she's doing hero avengers stuff to "try and make up for it" but the whole 30-second hawkeye speech is so painfully show don't tell that I can never buy it

The actual character, despite how much the films try and destroy who she is...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-08 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't like MCU wanted to. They can't use any of the stuff about her being a mutant or Magneto's daughter.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-08 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Right? I feel like Secret Poster doesn't understand that 21st Century Fox owns the rights to Magneto, the name "Scarlet Witch", and the entire concept of mutants. The ONLY reason MCU gets away with having Wanda and Pietro in the movies is BECAUSE they erased their Magneto-related backstories, had their powers given to them by HYDRA, and never, ever call them Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. So, yes, MCU Wanda is going to be a very different character from Marvel Comics Scarlet Witch, because most of the relevant parts of her history were removed out of necessity.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-08 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
And if the MCU wanted to, they could simply not use her character. Or her brother for that matter... If they knew they didn't have the rights to properly portray her, even in the slightest regard, they simply didn't need to add her.
But this is the MCU we're talking about, so why wouldn't they try for more money by advertising Scarlett Witch in their new movie. Give her half as much attention they barely give to even the main characters, and throw her into the credits with the other twelve dozen new characters they decided to add in along the way...

If they didn't have the rights she wouldn't be there. Frankly, they just didn't care.

I can agree with this, but she isn't the only character in the MCU(or other comic movies) that has been severely nerfed from their comic-book counterpart. I'll guess that's more to do with budget issues as flashy superpowers are going to cost a lot but even then there's many MCU characters than aren't half as powerful as their source material.

Otherwise I enjoy what they did with the power-set, I do mourn that lack of Pietro though, more for the potential of it as killing him was just such a pointless waste in AoU.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-08 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
No, it has more to do with making sure the characters can work together in team ups. Otherwise, Thor and Wanda would just be taking care of business while guy with arrows and woman with flipping skills tries not to die in the background.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-08 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
As a comic fan, I definitely agree. I seriously don't understand why they do that. If you're going to change everything about a character, why even use them?
