Is it legal?

Is it legal for companies you shop at to add you to their mass e-mailing lists when you never gave them your e-mail, you simply paid by credit card?

I'm super pissed. Lately it seems I can't pay by card at any cafe or retail store because I get put on their e-mail lists and get all their damn spam mail. I have no idea how my credit card is even linked to my e-mail address.

I don't know what's legal, but you might consider complaining to your credit card company. I get a lot of emails from stores (and theaters, and museums, etc.) but they were all times I gave out my email. I don't think I've had it happen with my credit card. I did move recently and was surprised how many places found my new address without me telling them. My undergrad alma mater must have gotten the info from the post office, but the grocery store could have gotten that from my credit card.

Are you sure that it's not your phone giving out this information?
