It kinda feels to me like the aesthetic of the TV shows is somewhat rooted in the earlier books of the series, and doesn't really capture the way that the series changed, even when it's adapting later books. And I like the middle-period books slightly more.

Sort of OP (it’s my comment but someone else did the hard work)—yeah, that sounds about right. I rarely reread the first couple Discworld books and tend to like the middle to late ones best—barring the last couple, because it was upsetting to realize why the quality was getting iffy. The book that really got me into the series was Small Gods, and I generally enjoy the more heavy-hitting ones.
