(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 01:21 am (UTC)(link)If David's job had always been to spy on Julia and uncover intel that would likely lead to her political downfall, then his falling for her in a hurry wouldn't have worked for me, but his job, initially, was to protect her. And I think it's very in keeping with David's character that once he's got someone in his head as A Person He Needs To Protect, he is an absolute pitbull about protecting them. We see it first with Nadia in the train. In a matter of minutes he goes from planning to kill the unidentified bomber, to ignoring orders and risking his own life to protect her. In David's own life, he feels isolated, afraid, at sea, and when we meet him he's been leaning on his work to give him a sense of stability and purpose - but we see very early on that his professionalism isn't as deep-rooted as his compulsive need to protect. His boss's mistake is in failing to understand that about him, and thus thinking they can change his job from "Protect Julia" to "Help us take down Julia" and that he'll behave as the detached and obedient professional he seems to be, and do as he's told.
