126. They should make a gay cowboy movie, though - a happy one. -_-

137. Eragon I agree with. His Dark Materials I can't say, as I haven't read them. Harry Potter... psh, I love Harry Potter. What *would* you consider good fantasy novels, then?

145. Ahhhh me too!!!! XD

146. Afraid of it? No, not all slashers are like that (not this one, for starters ;P).

153. Hypocritical? No, I know you probably know that, but... what do you think of your boyfriend, I wonder? =/

163. People make snide remarks about other women on the show because the other women on the show... are badly written too! Ohoho! But it's not just the women, I think - *gulp* - that as much as I love Heroes, it's *all* kind of badly written at times. But I still disagree with where you're going here. I don't think fandom is sexist, I think the writers just do a worse job of creating female characters than male. Yes, a FEW people in fandom are sexist, but you'll find that everywhere.

And sorry, Mylar is the sex. It will never stop being the sex. Maya could always join in if she *really* wanted to.... But I wouldn't watch.

183. Aww, I miss Lost too. Jack and his woobie tears - AND DANIEL FARADAY, YESPLZ.

163. LOL. AGREED!!!!!

163 - Hopefully they'll do better this season. Angela has loads of potential to be a great leading character.

Re: 126, 137, 145, 146, 153, 163,

[identity profile] postal152.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dude, I agree - I've always wanted to know more about her. It could get pretty interesting. :]

Re: 126, 137, 145, 146, 153, 163,

[identity profile] littlewings04.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
163: Agreed! Besides, if Maya joined in the Mylar action, she'd be a ceiling cookie. It's just a given.

Re: 126, 137, 145, 146, 153, 163,

[identity profile] postal152.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
LOL I just got a really great mental image of Maya as a ceiling cat. XD

On the adult side, I would recommend Neil Gaiman, L.E.Modesitt, and Terry Goodkind (with reservations.) If you like a side of wry humor with your fantasy, Peter David is also often enjoyable. He does occasionally try too hard with his writing, and some of the humor is forced, but he's good for a light read or an overlong airport stay.

On the young adult side, I would recommend Neil Gaiman (with reservations), some Diana Wynne Jones, and David Clement-Davies, as well as the much loved (with good reason) Redwall series.

For all ages, C.S. Lewis and Tolkien are good introductions into solid fantasy, though Lewis' later work (and notably his science fiction) are notably weaker than his earlier pieces. Tolkien can be difficult to trudge through if the reader is not ready or able to invest certain amounts of time and thought into what he is writing, and as such, he's not for everyone. I would, however, recommend that everyone read The Hobbit at least once in a lifetime.

I advise all parties to stay far, far away from: Robert Jordan, Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey, and Anne Rice (for certain values of batshit and badly written vampires).

A few people have accused me of being a bad troll for not including Twilight. I will not advise you one way or another on that series, having not read it myself and therefore having no opinion on the books.

Re: 137

[identity profile] mechanicaljewel.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Umm, Lewis's science fiction came before his fantasy. And personally, I share Tolkien's opinion that the Space Trilogy is better than the Chronicles of Narnia.

I see your LOLOLOLOLOL and raise you a ZOMGWTFBBQROFLMAO.

Re: 137

[identity profile] postal152.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I read some Terry Goodkind (he did Sword of Truth, right?) and was not inclined to read any more. But I'll definitely check out some of the others you mentioned. Thanks for taking the time to rec. I was frustrated with this secret at first, but now am quite excited. :]

And Redwall!! YES! Those were my *favorites* growing up (which wasn't really that long ago :P). Loved Narnia and LotR + the Hobbit, as well.

AND ROBBIE JORDAN, OH MY GOD. No series has disappointed me like Wheel of Time did. Six pages describing the direction a statue's pointing - seriously?? -_-

Haha, and I've already read Twilight and found it appalling. Thanks though. ;D

Re: 137

[identity profile] amarielah.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Wait...let me get this straight. You think that Terry Goodkind is better than Phillip Pullman?

I'm sorry, but I no longer trust a word you say.

Re: 137

(Anonymous) 2008-08-25 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I think the OP is just a really dedicated troll.

Re: 137

[identity profile] amarielah.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you're right.

Re: 137

[identity profile] evil-laugher.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Your comments are almost physically painful to read. If you're a troll, good job.

Re: 137

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Why is Terry Goodkind on that list? He doesn't write fantasy (http://shinga.deviantart.com/art/Head-Trip-State-of-Denial-39517592?offset=20).

You're missing the point by a mile, but that's okay, don't let that stop you!

[insert many more potshots at Mylar here because OMG, you're making it easy]

Re: 163 OP

[identity profile] postal152.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, then what *was* your point? (If you don't respond I'll assume you don't actually have a legitimate argument).

Re: 163 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-08-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Point A (implied) is that there are just as many flawed and badly written male characters that don't get hate. Point B (explicitly stated) is that the bitching focuses on female sexuality rather than on the ways in which the characters fail to be well written. So all in all:

The Point

[identity profile] ali-wildgoose.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Okay...really? Neither of those things are at all implied by your secret. It's not that other people are dumb. It's that you weren't clear.

Sorry.

I mean, you can continue thinking you're more intelligent than the entirety of the internet, but I'm not sure how well that will go in the long run.

Re: 163 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-08-25 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Snide remarks about the other women" generally doesn't mean "well-thought out commentary on how the writers have failed the female characters".

I'm sorry Mylar fans are getting defensive. (and I say Mylar because every person who has missed the point has said "I'm a Mylar fan.")

Lol.

Okay? Then I'm still not quite sure what you're so upset about. Fandom is mostly made up of women, what's wrong with discussing female sexuality? Or are you talking about the few batshit slash fans that freak out about women coming between their OTPs?

Re: 163 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-08-25 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing's wrong with discussing female sexuality. Insulting the female characters because of it, on the other hand? I... wait. FEW batshit freaks?

And sorry, Mylar is the sex. It will never stop being the sex.

Oh, gag me with a spoon.

Personally I find the idea of Mohinder/Maya utterly boring, but I would take it over the vast implausibility of Sylar/Mohinder any day.

[identity profile] postal152.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
It would never actually *happen* on the show, no, but that's why God made fanfiction. If you want to pick on a ship by calling it "implausible," though, I don't think we have much else to talk about.
