Nah. Everybody screws up, and the first day is arguably the most justifiable day to do it, since it's the literal first time ever baking in the tent.

Also, I don't remember who this is actually about, but I liked all of the long-term contenders from the most recent season, so I probably disagree with the secret about that as well.

I always wonder if competition shows pick those types on purpose.

American Idol famously featured terrible singers in the early try-out episodes of each season because audiences liked to laugh at them (I knew people who would only watch those episodes and not the real competition part). I don't know much about the GBBO selection process, but I, too, wonder if they purposefully throw in some people who don't seem to be that great because they seem to be interesting personalities and it might make the show more interesting.

I don't know how the selection process works - but IMO genuinely bad bakers really aren't that interesting on GBBO. Having meltdowns is different, everyone is prone to that to some degree, but people who obviously aren't cut out to be on the show are the least memorable contestants.

Do you think they want the first to go home to be memorable contestants?

Current season spoiler.

Mustache man didn't seem to have much of a personality beyond the great mustache and "I'm sooo lucky, gotta do better next week."

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes, absolutely. Even GBBO where the drama is nearly non-existent selects its contestants carefully. They have to in order to balance out the show. Watch a few seasons and notice how certain "types" appear - Young But Talented, Older and More Experienced, The Devoted Wife and Mother, The Ethnic Minority, The Burly White Dude Who Doesn't Look Like He Can Bake But He Can, The Underdog, The Perfectionist, The Goofy One With Weird Ideas, The One Who Can Bake But Not Decorate, The Artiste, etc. etc. And of course, combinations of all of the above.

Now in any group of bakers of course there's going to be a gradient of talent. It's not a coincidence that each season effortlessly sifts bakers into people who are definitely going to flame out in the first 2-3 weeks and bakers who will be competing for the semi-final/final.

Seriously?

Even very experienced bakers can have a dish they know like the back of their hands fail. Given the added pressures of cameras, time, being watched and judged, etc., I would be surprised if it didn't happen.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Being amateurs, they are not necessarily super-skilled all-around and are going to have a different level of skill with different baking tasks. For example, the person who is great with bread might be terrible at decorating cakes or making creme patissiere. If they get assinged something they aren't good at on the first week, they may do poorly right away, even with the chance to practice.

yeah, this. Not to sound egotistical but I can make great cakes, breads, etc. but I couldn't make a cheesecake at all no matter what.

https://www.kraftrecipes.com/recipe/052544/philadelphia-classic-cheesecake

its five ingredients because I just buy the graham crust instead of making it so its even easier. Fool-proof and everyone thinks I'm an amazing cook, when its really just a recipe I got off the philly cream cheese box. Warning that the page plays chipper music when you open it.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
DA - This recipe is legit and it's the one I use all the time. Storebought graham cracker crusts make it even easier, but honestly, if you have the pan doing your own tastes better and allows you to make a much larger cheesecake.

Yup. GBBO is kind of unique I think in featuring one type of thing each episode. Most competition shows start out with a more generic first challenge.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, controversial! I figure there's a lot of things that can go wrong when you're baking under pressure, with a time limit, using unfamiliar equipment. But it's also true that some people have bad ideas or just aren't as good as they've been told they are by friends and family.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I know someone who was on a game show (Wheel of Fortune, to be exact) and he said you can't even imagine the level of nerves and pressure. Everyone can solve the puzzle from their living room couch...

I imagine it's even worse when you're dealing with ovens.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Is this about Ruby? She fucked up in the first episode and scraped through, got better and better and deserved her place in the finale. The first week must be super weird for everyone, especially the first technical challenge.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
She gets so much hate. I feel like it's because she's young and pretty as opposed to more experienced.

I feel like she did damn good considering she was going through schooling at the same time as this. Like, can you imagine how much was going on in her life?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. She's young and pretty. That must be why she gets so much hate. Certainly no other contestant has been young and/or attractive, so we can't compare reactions to test that hypothesis or anything.

Almost all of the contestants on the show have school, jobs, children, etc. She's not special.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Good lord. Not the OP, so I can't say for sure, but can one GBBO secret go through here without a mention of Ruby? Lots of people mess up the first week. You're the one making it about her.
