I really disagree. It makes sense especially with how everyone treats Matt's vigilantism like a drug addiction. Also, when you fix yourself you can be a bit hard on people that haven't yet.

I loved this season and it really helped me like Karen better

She's too pretty for me to effectively judge her character

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
i agree with everything you've said, op.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I wanted to like Karen but they keep giving me reasons not to and simultaneously making it seem like Karen is too good for everyone.

To be fair the drug addiction is comic canon. I think it was after she met Matt in the comics not before. She had HIV too if I remember.

Yeah, I already thought she was a hypocrite for killing Wesley then keeping it a secret when it dangerously involved Matt and Foggy, and sympathizing with the murderer Punisher yet railing on Matt constantly, constantly oh my god. But apparently she's an utter fuck-up who uses constant two-face lying and then drugs and booze (and violence) when that doesn't solve her problems, so I'm not sure where her holier-than-thou attitude comes from. Fuck off, Karen.

This exactly. Her interactions with Matt aren't consistent with her interactions with Frank. It drives me nuts.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Just admit you've never liked her and that was never gonna change.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's silly. You have no reason to believe that OP wasn't making a good faith effort besides your own cynicism about the character. I can see where Karen could be a more sympathetic character but frankly, the inconsistencies in her character reek of bad writing and it's very annoying even if you know it's the fault of sloppy characterization and people who don't give a shit about continuity issues.

DA

Not silly at all. It’s fairly common IME. Some people will just never like a character no matter where their story goes. And the whole “I tried to like them,” is as valid a thing as it is often utter bullshit.

I never liked Karen, and so far the show hasn't convinced me to change my mind. The focus on her has made me less inclined to watch the show, too.

I hear the actress who plays her is awesome, though.

I was okay with her until she pulled that stunt that in the end got Ben killed. And she never got called out for it. Instead she got his job and his family's endorsement (without them knowing all the facts it seems). She always acts before thinking and gets all teary eyed and sad when shit hits the fan as a result. But she never learns a lesson from all of this. And why should she? She always gets praised in the end.

Yeah, that whole episode was weird. She does sort of address the problem, but... the show mostly sweeps it all under the rug and treats it like it's okay. It's a messy problem they don't want to deal with so they handwave everything and Karen ends up looking like a sociopath who got her mentor murdered and then stole his job.

Her characterization is just so terrible, it's as if each season they get a new bunch of writers who've never watched or read scripts for any of the previous seasons so they just write an entirely new Karen for whatever role they need that season even if it doesn't gel with previous seasons.

Oh man. I try to like Karen. In some instances I can (she's at her best in The Punisher, but even then. . . ), but overall? She's an incredibly hard character for me to like. She's holier than thou for no reason, judges EVERYONE, fucks up constantly but never learns from it, suffers no consequences for her actions. . .

Deborah Ann Woll did a fantastic job in this episode. My dislike of Karen isn't the fault in the acting, but in the writing.
