Does it make you a bad person to pretend to be sick to get out of something you don't want to do? (A social thing, not work or something super important.)

It depends how sick you're pretending to be, but mostly no.

Not bad per se but it is dodgy and immature. Say thank you for the invite but I won't be able to make it and go on about your business.

Meh, it's all a question of convenience. Telling a little harmless lie beats having to deal with questions, harassment, guilt-tripping, arguments, ultimatums, etc. Sometimes circumstances won't allow people the luxury of standing their ground.

I'd be curious what circumstances would mean you absolutely can't tell someone the truth about your very reasonable wish to not go out that still meant they could be easily fooled by the "I'm sick" excuse.

Sometimes when you put up with BS and appease people with white lies, your "reward" is more BS and having to tell more and more lies.

"Telling a little harmless lie beats having to deal with questions, harassment, guilt-tripping, arguments, ultimatums, etc"

A flat, "Sorry, I can't make it," does all that, and doesn't give them a story to dig into.

Just say, "Sorry, I can't make it," and get on with your life.

Eh, I wouldn't say it makes you a bad person, per se... but it's not a great way to deal with social obligations. You'd be better off learning how to manage your social life and declining invitations so you don't have to lie about it. It'll be easier in the long run even if it doesn't seem like it.
