To ask questions.

Finding E-Books

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
How the hell am I supposed to find good self-published fiction on the Internet?

Is there any way besides following a bunch of self-promo-y people on social media or relying on aggregators with random taste

Re: Finding E-Books

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have any that you like already?
If so you can google reviews and look at that person's other reviews or see who's read them on goodreads and see what else they like.

Re: Finding E-Books

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I use a kindle and download the free sample. I buy any that hooked me and have also bought a couple that I just felt the author was deserving of whatever peanuts they get from my 99¢ even if the story wasn't really what I was in the mood to read.

I never go on goodreads or anything like that. I can't stand the toxic culture that has sprung up around indie authors and semi-professional critics. I have tried to find books or authors there in the past and instead I found recommendations for crap and pure gold was all slagged off. My tastes just don't align with the people who use sites like that I guess.

Does it make you a bad person to pretend to be sick to get out of something you don't want to do? (A social thing, not work or something super important.)

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
It depends how sick you're pretending to be, but mostly no.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Not bad per se but it is dodgy and immature. Say thank you for the invite but I won't be able to make it and go on about your business.

Eh, I wouldn't say it makes you a bad person, per se... but it's not a great way to deal with social obligations. You'd be better off learning how to manage your social life and declining invitations so you don't have to lie about it. It'll be easier in the long run even if it doesn't seem like it.

secret makers

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
how do you make secrets that lots of people respond to?

I only ever get maybe one or two replies if any.

Controversial opinions. Use extreme language. Not just "I hate blah blah." but I FUCKING HATE blah blah.

Re: secret makers

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Make one that you know will start wank.

Re: secret makers

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Aggressive wording.

"I ship this (somewhat obscure ship nobody pays attention to)" won't get you much.

"I ship this, and if you ship (other, popular ship) instead, I JUDGE YOU because (list of reasons why the other ship is terrible awful bad)" will get you more.

In fact, an "I judge you if" statement anywhere in your secret is always a good way to get responses!

I reply to any replies the secret gets in hope of starting an actual discussion. Sometimes it works.

Re: secret makers

It seemed like secrets relating to Benedict Cumberbatch's penis would get lots of comments. Not sure if that would still work. (Also, it's understandable if you have no secrets to tell about his penis.)

Re: secret makers

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Admit you dislike a female character in a popular piece of media. Even if you explain your reasons for why you don't like her, a bunch of comments will be about how you're a lying misogynist or that no, bad writing isn't a good enough excuse to dislike a female character when it's clearly sexism on your part, etc. etc.

Honestly? No idea.

I submitted I think 10 secrets this week. The secret I thought would be the wankiest only got a handful of comments while one that was just kind of an admission to the void generated a lot of discussion I frankly wasn't all that interested in.

There's no guarantee of anything, really. Controversial opinions help, but you can't always gauge what's going to set people off. Making secrets about more popular, current fandoms help. keep it short and sweet. Don't underestimate the power of making a secret legible - fewer people bother to read secrets with teensy tiny ant text done in light colors on a light background that's 200x300 pixels big.

Bring up bandit mask markings on Huskies

Snape vs. James is good if you want back-and-forth over bullying and racism vs. bullying and sexual assault

Captain America vs. Iron Man is good if you want to rehash Civil War yet again

You could write how you don't mind whitewashing or someone cis playing trans

You could write something about how you don't understand why fic writers want validation/write the way they do/write what they do/like a trope/whatever and as long as you at least sort of imply that they are stupid for doing so.

But all of that is trolling if you don't care about it, so instead maybe make it about something in fandom that you love or hate that you wouldn't readily admit in public. Write about how you masturbated to 'that' part in It (the book), write about how you wish people would stop talking about Breaking Bad/Game of Thrones/whatever, write about how you loved Rainbow Brite/California Dreams/Small Wonder/whatever. It just has to be something that people are interested in and want to put their two cents in about.

Presents for Knitters

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
My best friend loves to knit and I really want to get her some sweet knitting-related items, but I honestly know very little about knitting and I'm not sure how to ask her without being super obvious. So if you're a knitter, what kind of knitting supplies would you like?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Try stuff on this? https://giftlab.co/gifts-for-knitters/

If not, a gift card to someplace so she can get yard would be nice.

My partner's mum loves knitting, and while I was getting yarn to use for her scarf I found these gorgeous little scissors:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/BIHRTC-Stainless-Scissors-Embroidery-Colourful-x/dp/B073CH9LJB/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1543024454&sr=8-4&keywords=stork+scissors

There's loads of different colours/finishes. I got the metallic ones for myself and a pair for her. They're really good quality and super sharp. :)

Sort of medical question

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I started a job a few months ago, and at that job I work 8-10 hours most days, with no break and no chances to sit down. Recently my knees and legs have been hurting so bad, every day, all the time from this. It always hurt but it’s just been getting worse. I wear non slip restaurant shoes for this job and the lines I can afford are uncomfortable and make my feet hurt, but idk if that contributes to my contestant leg pain, because that’s mainly in my knees.

So my question, which is probably a dumb one but here goes, is would it even be worth it to go to a doctor for this? I’m afraid they’ll just tell me not to stand so much or to wear different shoes, neither of which is possible, or get a knee brace, which I don’t need to go to a doctor for.

Maybe you just need insoles? I wear them all the time and they do help. Ask about them.

The Grinch (2018) fanfiction

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I saw it Tuesday and ended up shipping Grinch and Donna, Cindy-Lou Who's mom. I looked at fan fiction.net and AO3 but didn't find much. Where else should I look?
