Honestly at this point, for me, a dead fandom is infinitely better than a nonexistent one so I'll take it.

I think "dead" is "there are fanworks and the remnants of message board conversations but no one is contributing" and "nonexistent" is "fanworks? What fanworks?"

In some ways, it's better. Usually IME people are still willing to talk about it (if it was a big enough fandom) but all of the wackiness and drama is usually in the past.

Yeah, but once you've found all the good fic, that's it. There's almost no new stuff coming, and what little new fic is coming will either be

a) in a different language

b) bad

That is an amazing image choice, OP. I have sympathy, though; even if the drama and wank are gone, you run out of fic really quick, there's no one to talk to, and if the fandom has been long enough dead, half the fandom that did exist has vanished into the void of the Angelfire graveyard.

I've been like... exclusively into older movies lately and sometimes the fandom is just me and whatever friend I can drag into watching them with me so that I have one person reading my fanfiction, but like... it's honestly so fun and freeing? I'm passionate about the movies themselves and like... I know there's not really going to be any wank or fighting and so I can really just go wild if I want to create things.

(plus when you do run into someone else in a dead/non-fandom, they tend to be really enthusiastic and nice, in my experience)
