The one pairing that intrigued me enough to go looking for fic way back when, and of course it had like... three pages on FFN.

I was in a Harry/Ron group back in the LiveJournal days and saw some pretty good fic at that time, but in volume it certainly doesn't compare to some other pairings.

Thinking back, I'm pretty sure half the reason I went looking was because my then current fandom was pretty dead. Becaues I recall I went looking after novel-length fic, something I had the distinct impression the Potter fandom excelled at - and then nothing for Harry/Ron. Given the size of the fandom, that surprised me a lot.

It seems like in some (maybe most?) fandoms enemy or rival ships are way more popular than ships between friends. I can think of a few exceptions, such as Trigun, but usually people seem drawn to that dynamic. However sometimes they don't bring that dynamic into fic and make the characters total lovebirds, which is weird to me.

I really never understood the hate some people had for Ron. He was great.

Ron's my favorite tbh

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto

Cause Ron unfortunately has a lot of traits that are actually straight up negative rather than positive with a negative bent. I personally don’t mind because it makes him normal but petty teenaged growing pains isn’t attractive to read compared to harry’s problems of fighting wizard!hitler.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That's interesting! For me, the school elements, the characters, and the magical background stuff - those things were all more enjoyable to me than the big overarching Voldemort plot, which I always felt was kind of generic, especially in the later books.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-26 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
They were to me, too, but Ron was a character I couldn't enjoy. I never got over his jealousy - being jealous of a friend is something very alien to me. And money and fame were not things that mattered to Harry the way they did to Ron, and Ron treating Harry so crappy because of them made me dislike Ron quite a bit.

I never hated Ron. But there were things about him that bugged me. Like, Harry lost his parents, was abused by the relatives that raise him, and had an insane wizard Nazi who wanted him dead, and yet Ron seemed to think he had it worse and actually wanted Harry's crappy life. Like, it was normal I guess, and kind of understandable, but it still bugged me. It was nice to see him growing out of that in book 7, but he clung onto it way too long.

That being said, I love the Trio friendship and I totally do ship Harry/Ron.

Ron was classic grass is always greener syndrome. He also had a massive inferiority complex and was pretty much the unfavorite until Percy took over that role in book 5. I don’t blame him for being messed up and envying Harry even if Harry had the shittier end of the stick because from Ron’s perspective it wasn’t that bad. (Although he’s also discounting the abuse Harry suffered from the Dursleys)

Unfavorite? I don't see that at all. It seems to me like all the Weasley kids were treated pretty equally until Percy became an ass.

I totally get that Ron thought Harry's life was better than it was. I just personally found some of Ron's traits a little irritating and thought he should have grown out of them a little sooner. Doesn't make him terrible. I like Ron. He just isn't a favorite.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

"Unfavorite" isn't the right word, but all of his siblings were cooler, more impressive, funnier, smarter, or the only girl in the family. "Overlooked" is maybe better than "unfavorite".

(Anonymous) 2018-11-26 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
He pretty much was though. Look at how forgotten he is in the dynamics of his family:
Bill - the perfect first born, Charlie - the athlete, Percy - the academic, Fred and George - the trouble making clowns, and Ginny - the only girl and therefore special. Ron has literally nothing going for him. Anything he accomplished his older brothers had already done or were better than him. The only thing he had going for him was being *painfully* average and aware of it. No wonder he had an inferiority complex. I don’t doubt Molly and Arthur loved all their kids but they weren’t the greatest parents. Or at least dropped the ball big time when it came to Ron.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I always felt quite bad for Ron, because I can only imagine how plain and dull and unspecial I'd feel in his place. One of his closest friends was bordering on genius, and the other was rich, famous, and a literal savior figure. Plus, he was one of seven siblings, and while his parents were loving people, to the rest of the world he was basically the least notable Weasley sibling. Plus, a "C" student, kind of awkward-looking, and poor.

Harry's life was definitely worse, but Harry as a person was intensely, unmissably special - as special as Ron was plain. And I think age 11 - 17 is a time when a lot of people are really struggling with the whole "Who am I and what am I good for?" thing.

So I think it makes sense that Ron envied Harry desperately for his specialness while kind of overlooking or underestimating all the shit Harry was dealing with. I mean, I wanted to be Buffy Summers when I was fifteen, or at least be just like Buffy, and if that meant being The Chosen One, I thought Yes, absolutely, I'll take it - as long as I get to be special and know who I am and feel worthwhile, I'll take it. That kind of thinking is just a teen thing, for a lot of us, I think.

He was a dick sometimes, yes, but in ways that made sense to me and felt realistic, and were also clearly not the main portion of his personality, so I didn't hold it against him much.
philstar22: (Default)

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-11-26 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it was totally realistic. It is just a personality trait that personally bothers me. I don't think it is the majority of his personality. And I do like him. It is just that particular trait bothers me and puts him lower on my personal list of favorites.

I used to get super defensive about him, though, when all the bashing was going on. The fics making him evil and such. That was terrible and annoying.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-26 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't really like him because he was jealous and sullen at times. It was realistic, but annoying to me. But the thing that really bothered me was how he kept getting angry with Harry for things Harry didn't do and when Harry said he didn't do them, Ron assumed he was lying. If had been just once, I could understand it, but it kept happening. I just don't think Ron was a good friend.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a good secret and you should be proud of yourself. :)

The pairing, to me, just makes sense. Ron, done correctly, is Harry's rock; keeps him grounded, has his back, but will call him on his BS if needed.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ron is my favorite character. That's why I only like this pairing if Harry is in unrequited love with Ron. Frankly, everyone should be in love with Ron.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Ron is good but everyone should be in love with Neville and / or Luna before they're in love with Ron

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Will never understand the Luna love. Ever.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ship it personally, but I'll take it a million times over Harry/Hermione.
