As a teen, Francesca Lia Block's books had a strong impact on me. I was deeply unhappy and life was pretty mundane, but her writing tapped into an inate feeling I had that life was also strange, quirky, sensual, and full of beauty - even when it was awful.

As an adult, Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels made a tremendous impression on me. Actually, I loved it for the same reasons I loves FLB's books as a teen, although Fugitive Pieces was much more adult, nuanced, subtle, and realism-based.
