I loved Left Hand of Darkness, but it's been awhile since I read it. Did she switch the pronouns or something? What I read used "he".

She wrote another story set on the same planet that used "she," and a series of essays reevaluating her choice before coming to the conclusion that she should have used "they" to start with. Her willingness to do self-crit is one of the things I love about her.
