I'm probably biased because I'm not a parent, but it kind of seems like... well... after you have kids, your world shrinks and refocuses. You just don't have the time for the hobbies and wider social circle you might've enjoyed as a single person so your kids take first priority. IMO it's kind of a biological thing. If you didn't develop an intense interest in the minutiae of parenting, you'd be screwed.
