This is one of the reasons why I don't get that excited about Rowling's writing skills. She's a decent storyteller... which isn't quite the same thing. Her world building is shaky, she doesn't put much thought into the details beyond a fairly superficial "ooh, this is nifty!" sort of way and that's why some of it works and some of it doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Eh.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, true though. Plus it's kind of funny that anyone would be shocked to find out the dude was a werewolf at Hogwarts with a name like that. Like, of course he's a fucking werewolf.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
IDK, naming your kid like that for no reason actually seems like something wizards would do

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I guess counterpoint would be "Draco" Malfoy. Who isn't a dragon. But is a douchey little jerk, so I guess it was prophetic in its own way.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe that's why the Potter kids are all named like that, maybe bad names are required by wizard law

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
There’s a fic where he’s a dragon animagus though and many jokes are had about his name predicting it.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Charlie Weasley would not approve of this statement.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
It's a Meaingful Name, like all Meaningful Names, and Harry Potter has them all over.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ironically the main trio has delightfully meaningless names. "Harry Potter" is such a fantastic and unassuming name, going by nothing but rhythmic satisfaction. Ron and Hermoine, too.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I barely remember it but I feel like people spent a lot of time trying to come up with Significant Meanings for Ron's name.

And I'm not even talking about Ronbledore here...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's a children's book series. Everything about it is kind of shallow and gimmicky. It is what it is.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Truth is somewhere in the middle on this one

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
You mean... you think it has... merits?

Whew boy did you stumble into the wrong community.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
lmao like 90% of this comm likes Harry Potter

even the people who think that sometimes Jo makes some missteps

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but this community continues to have a strong Harry Potter presence. Pretty sure it's still f!s's biggest fandom?

I once read an HP fanfic where there was a law against werewolves using their original name if they came from a wizarding family and so Remus's name was an intentional 'fuck you' mandatory renaming. Not canon in the slightest but canon was pretty ridiculous on this.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I totally didn't get it, and I was reading as an adult. I kept thinking of lupins, and the Monty Python sketch with Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore, riding through the glen, and his lupin obsession.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Totally didn't catch that about Remus. Dang! Lupin was more obvious to me.

I hate that whole names-should-have-meaning thing. A friend once started telling me about the importance of names because she didn't like one that I had chosen for an OC in my fic. Um, it's an OC, and no it doesn't have to MEAN anything, and I'm allowed to pick an uncommon name and not have it MEAN something... ugh.

Gods, wouldn't it be nice if Artemis Fowl draws away at least some of this tired wank.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Remus Lupin name wank is common enough to be tired?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Rowling isn't that great of a writer because reasons" wank.

And we shall call him Wolfy McWolferson. Maybe he'll grow up to be a shepherd!

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There’s also Fenrir, hagrid raising werewolf-pups under his bed according to Tom Riddle, and now Remus’ father is named Lyall fgs
