Inspired by #3: Vampire fans!

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
What's your favorite type of vampire? Do you prefer the traditional blood sucker, the straight up monster vamp or the vampirism-as-a-disease or something else?

And what vampire story settings do you like the best? Historical or modern? Urban or rural?

I like traditional blood-suckers, but I'm not down with vampires that look like Nosferatu or anything. I think if you need to suck blood to live, you need to be attractive in some way or you'd never get close enough to actually *get* the blood.

I detest woe-is-me, depressed vamps, and ones that don't drink human blood. I don't need them to be insanely evil 'monsters', just not whiny angst balls.

"I think if you need to suck blood to live, you need to be attractive in some way or you'd never get close enough to actually *get* the blood."

I LOLed. ;D On a more serious note... I'd think a brute strength blitz attack would also work. Or powers of mesmerism. But I prefer plausibly good looking vampires, myself.

100% on the no whiny vampires. Nobody would put up with a vamp whiner for centuries. You'd get staked first!

Yeah, but blitz attack is kinda boring, story-wise, if that's all they do. I do like vamps that can mix and mingle.

I never got the whiny 'i wish i were dead, omg, i'm a monster!!' vamps. So - go out in the sun? It's not like you're *actually* immortal - stuff can kill you, so....

Angel really got on my nerves.

I don't know about needing to be attractive. If you're supernaturally faster and stronger than pretty much any human, potentially with other powers like changing into animals, controlling animals, turning into mist, climbing vertical walls, etc, you probably can get by just straight up grabbing and overpowering people. I mean. Just mug somebody in a dark forest/alley and chow down. Rinse and repeat as needed.

Sure. But kinda boring story-wise. I like it if they can go out and mingle with humans. And just leaping out of the shadows for centuries would get old and kinda boring. Being able to stalk your prey *and* have a fancy car or lots of awesome books or whatever is more interesting, to me.

If you live for six centuries, you should have *something* to show for it other than a box full of dirt.

Well, that's a fair preference. I don't think it would necessarily mean a boring story though. Just a different character type. Or range of types. You can play it as the 'woe is me' vampire, just with arguably a bit more cause when they're hideous and have to spend their unlives mugging people in dark alleys. Or play them as a purely pragmatic predator, who doesn't play around with humans because they don't CARE about them anymore, and what concerns them are more powerful threats like other vampires or possibly hunters, those rare humans who can actually fight them. Depends on setting too. In a world where the supernatural is hidden, yes, visibly monstrous vampires are going to be at a disadvantage plotwise. In worlds where the supernatural is right out in the open, it needn't be the same kind of barrier.

Also, I mean, you can be hideous and mug and kill people for food and still live in a castle with a library. Particularly if the castle is also supernatural, but even normally too. Money works just as well as good looks. Better in some circles.

Heeee. It's true, money is a great incentive - just look at tRump!

Since i detest all 'woe is me' vamps, I'd rather plump for 'the supernatural is out there and we know about it' kind of thing.

(Though an attractive vampire is still more...attractive, to me, than one that looks like a Gollum, but a good story could sway me.)

My thing is that existing vampires would probably choose attractive people to make into vampires. It'd be a self-selecting process, assuming you go with lore that vampires are the ones to sire other vamps, by giving them vamp blood or whatever.

Listeno, why do they have to be shallow, just because they're vampires

I dunno man, I guess it seems less vampirey to me if they really take the time to get to know you as a person first

If you're gonna spend the next few hundred years with someone, I imagine you probably want them to at least meet your preferences.

Usually with unattractive vampires, it's the curse itself that does the damage. You start to look like the corpse you are, or the evil of the curse warps you around it. Nosferatu-type vampires don't usually get a choice how they look past a certain amount of time. So, in that case, it doesn't really matter what they looked like originally, though the vampire who turned them could well have picked them for their beauty.

I'm always interested in child vampires. Armand is my favorite from Rice's novels, I played one in V:TM and I think Let the Right One In is the greatest vampire media ever made ha

I like the Buffy version of them being half-demons. I also like a version where they are a different species and can drink other types of blood if they choose. I also like weird versions that eat things other than blood (like the vampire-like wraith of the Stargate universe that eat lifeforce).
