If one of your favorite books got made into an adaptation...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
... would you want them to stick to the book version pretty closely? Or do you like to see different interpretations of the canon?

I was pretty happy with the weird universe they created out of Thomas Harris' Red Dragon when making Hannibal. It's nothing like the book at all and I am strangely a-okay!

I think it can be really interesting to see different takes on the canon, actually.

Re: If one of your favorite books got made into an adaptation...

Generally, I don't mind adaptations altering material to optimize it for a specific medium. A book generally has too much to fit into a single movie, so I don't mind it being reworked a little to fit the format.

But "interpretation" is a little different. I think the "interpretation" should be the as close to the spirit of the original as possible. I think the characters and themes should be honored and portrayed with integrity to the original versions, even if the plot itself and therefore dialogue, etc. has to be changed.

I guess it depends on what I love about the book. If I love the time period it's set in and they make a modern version then I might not be as interested. Sometimes if the same thing gets multiple adaptations I get a bit burned out on it. I watched Sherlock but still haven't been arsed to watch Elementary, for example.

I would love to see a very canon Downbelow Station, though i get that the book is pretty long, and a lot of it wouldn't really work for a movie, so - Very Canon Tv Series, *including* everything that Signy Mallory did.

Perfect timing, as the Artemis Fowl trailer was released.

It looks different than the books, some changes are for the better like more ladies, and some aren't, like Holly....being white.....

We'll see.

I'd only enjoy another Tolkien adaption if it was a lot more faithful to the books. I mean, I love the LOTR movies (Hobbit not so much), but every time I rewatch, I notice more things that just aren't the same as the books. I'm not sure I even want another adaption, but if there is one (I know the Amazon tv series, not sure if that is even going to be a straight up adaption, though), it needs to be more faithful.

Re: If one of your favorite books got made into an adaptation...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
There were a few books I loved as a tween/teen, and I'd still love to see them adapted, but re-reading them now I realize how WHITE the cast is. There's like two minor 'token' characters; everyone else is explicitly described as white. So I'd like to see an adaptation with a bit more diversity.

I'd love an adaptation of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants that treats Lena's storyline with the respect it deserves. The Romeo & Juliet style bullshit they pulled in the 2005 adaptation makes me really angry to this day.

Re: If one of your favorite books got made into an adaptation...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hard to say. When I love a book, I love it as a book and while I cam imagine a given scene as a movie in my head, I am no filmmaker and don't have a of ideas about how to make the whole thing work together as a movie and make it good. Sometimes I can think of things that should probably be changed for a movie, but I can't make blanket statements about all my favorite books. I agree with the other person that the spirit of the story and characters are more important than keeping all the specific scenes and dialogue. It just depends on the book.

One thing I can say, as a long-time fan of Sherlock Holmes, is that the more a thing has already been adapted and done well/faithfully, the more I like it when people get adventurous with their interpretations and re-imaginings. Might as well try something new!

My mother's surgery was very successful. they did everything they needed to do, it was only minimally invasive, and it looks like she's going to be a lot better once her surgery recovery is over.

Monetized blogs

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Do any of you monetize your blogs? I have a Wordpress blog that's been getting some traffic (it's an anime review blog) and wonder if I shouldn't look into putting ads on it for an extra bit of pocket money. Anyone have any experience?

I also recently was messaged by someone looking to affiliate with their company - I think the idea is that I'd put their ad on my blog and if someone clicked and bought anything, I'd get a percentage or something. (The affiliate in question is apparently an online manga reading site). Not sure if it's legitimate or not, but anyone have experience with that sort of thing, too?

Inspired by #3: Vampire fans!

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
What's your favorite type of vampire? Do you prefer the traditional blood sucker, the straight up monster vamp or the vampirism-as-a-disease or something else?

And what vampire story settings do you like the best? Historical or modern? Urban or rural?

Secret Submission Patters

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
What are your personal patterns in secret submission?

I rarely submit. Some weeks I have one or two secrets. Then I have the weeks that inspiration hits and I submit a whole bunch and end up having a third of the secrets for that week be mine.

Fandom has been my main hobby for forever but... depression

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Just a vent but I feel like depression has finally taken away my last main interest, fandom, which I have been active in for 12 years :( but now I can’t write anything, it always feels like my brain is falling out of my head. I watch things and want to participate but in the last few months I’ve become isolated and don’t even talk to people online anymore. I read stuff, but it sometimes makes me anxious thinking about fic because I should be writing but I can’t... I had wips and worse a fic request I was doing for someone but then I had a meltdown and it’s been like I have nothing in my head ever since... and I just feel like I’m losing everything. It sounds dumb but like... I feel like my interests have been slipping away, but I always thought I would still be into fandom at least. But now it’s like I have nothing. I wake up, I go to work (which I hate), I come home, I aimlessly try and fail to find something to interest me for hours, then I sleep. I barely feel like a person anymore. I don’t get excited about anything.

I don’t know. It sucks. Sorry if this should be a second comment. I still hang out on here, as a lurker, wishing I didn’t feel this way :(
