Try being a Blackwall fan and then we'll talk.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Secret OP: I am, in fact, quite fond of Blackwall. He's not my favourite LI, but he's up there.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ehh... Blackwall is a completely different matter entirely.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
i'm sorry that no one took you up on that wank offer but i'm a blackwall fan and if you still wanna go i'm here

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Not ayrt, but the thing with Blackwall is that the mid-game reveal means he was always destined to be a pretty niche character. People who would've liked the character he's presented as for the first 30 hours of the game aren't necessarily going to keep liking him after the reveal, and people who would've liked the sort of character he actually is aren't necessarily going to be interested enough in the initial presentation to care by the time the reveal rolls around. Even if the more popular LIs were removed, he wouldn't gain much of a following because the way his story plays out makes him a weird mix of controversial and inoffensive that isn't going to hook people who go for either end of the spectrum. And the controversy has nothing to do with mages or elves, so he won't hook the stans either.

ayrt

...You wanna calm down a bit there asshole.
What are you even trying at? It's not like I even said anything offensive, hell, Blackwall was my first romance.

What I meant was exactly what I said. Blackwall has nothing to do with this secret, as a matter of fact, his situation has literally nothing to do with both Cullen and Solas being popular at all. So it doesn't matter how pissy you want to be, nobody asked for your opinion.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Mhhhh, if every person is agreeing on the same thing, don’t you think you should maybe look in a mirror and consider you are the one who is wrong and that these characters are popular for a reason?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh sure! I'm just being too harsh on the guy who wants to destroy the world :) :) :)
Btw, you're a dick!

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck off anon.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Don't know this fandom and don't really care, but you have a point with this. Not necessarily that everyone is right to like these characters and OP is wrong not to. But the way OP phrases their secret, it's like everyone else is wrong, which is very unlikely to be true.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Case in point is that both of you know nothing about the series.
Cullen was featured in a 'thank you' speech shirtless- the characters thanking the people for their award even made a point to 'notice' it. Cullen is basically really fucking hot according to the fanbase- it's what most people consider his greatest characteristic.
So the OP is not wrong to consider his actual personality boring... (even if others, like me, disagree...)

The DA fandom is extraordinarily sensitive to certain things... and even without that in account, I don't think the OP worded their secret with any special meaning. (but then again, as witness to the fandom, I might have just missed it.)
I assume this sensitivity has to do with Solas' popularity. Because if you played the game, as any type of inquisitor, you'd know the OP isn't mixing words... He's pretty much a racist bitch, even to elves (his own race)- people might like him because he feels he has reasons to feel this way... but honestly, I just don't get it with him.

/Anders was popular... and if you've even heard of DA2, then you know why popularity and reason aren't the same thing./

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm all for Solas since man, that potential drama for DA4, but if we're talking about conventional, yes, man Cullen is boring, although they do a great job giving him rooms for development after all three games.

Still, Alistair > every other LIs, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I thought all LIs in that game were bland at best. And very unfairly distributed.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, I liked Dorian, and Bull. And Josephine was cute, even if there wasn't nearly enough content for her. I really disliked Sera/Dalish!Inquisitor, though.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Dorian and Bull as characters but I hated them as LIs. The m/m options were really lacking for me. Josephine is really cute but still kinda bland and Sera just annoyed me so much that I was tempted to just kick her out several times.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure how I feel on the Cullen front, since I ship him with Dorian- but I assume most of the content directed towards him has to do with him appearing in all three games...
He was a last minute romance I hear, because he was so apparently popular... (it's also why his canon relationships are so limited...)

Solas on the other hand, I completely agree- I played my first game as a dwarf, and while I liked that he allowed me to play into my characters given obliviousness to the fade/spirits/whatever- it was obvious the questions were not dwarf specified. So basically, he is an obviously racist bastard, ugly to boot, and while I somehow don't hate him for all of his faults... I have no idea why /anyone/ would actually like/ship the guy...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the one question all dwarf Inquisitors should have been able to ask - "Solas, how the fuck am I dreaming at all?!?!"

My first playthrough was with a Qunari, so my key memory of Solas is always gonna be the "You're a credit to your race" speech. Not great.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
I know right!?;;
Like the whole scene where we're back at Haven, I'm just waiting for the point I can mention this dream thing being new to me;; (of course that didn't even happen;; the most I've ever got on this point is back in Origins with Oghren;;) Like if Solas 'knows our species so well' he should at least know Dwarves don't dream... The asshole...

Especially as a Qunari. I played one the third time around and was surprised that my opinion of him could drop any lower than it already was... but the 'credit' speech, like you said, definitely managed it... ugh.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
And he was kinda racist towards everyone, even elves, weirdly enough! It was especially annoying playing an elf because, even when romancing him, his constant maximum condescension mode without actually ever explaining things pissed me off so much.
Like, oh gee Solas, you keep saiying I have it all wrong and we're just stupid children playing pretend BUT YOU WON'T ACTUALLY TELL ME WHAT WE'RE SO WRONG ABOUT!

In general, I thought the game was pretty much tailored to play a female mage elf character. That's where you had the most options.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yup!

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
What else would be the most popular? I mean... fans usually love asshole characters like Solas and Cullen is the stereotypical handsome romance male character.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
+1

on another note, this secret reminded whole reason I observed DA fandom from the sidelines.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate the ships, but the fact that they are so popular does mean that a lot of the fics are tropes; trash or idealised versions of the characters - so many of both pairings tend to minimise the characters flaws to play up the romance.
...trying to find decent stories is almost impossible :/
