IMO most of the time the plot is weaker than the visuals, but sometimes for works like Pacific Rim, it's adequate. PR was all about robots vs. monsters, and it was a great popcorn flick. Pan's Labyrinth was a more brutal version of your bog standard portal fantasy but honestly, the visuals meant it transcended the basic plot. Crimson Peak was, IMO, a fairly decent gothic but I think it was mis-marketed and people expected a horror story or something. Haven't seen Shape of Water.
