I don't disagree one bit.

I'm with you, OP!

But Pan's Labyrinth and Shape of the Water have amazing stories. Pacific Rim achieves exactly what it wants. I've not seen the other one.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Pacific Rim was widely considered shallow and Crimson Peak got middling reviews, so I'm not sure how he's "overrated" outside of his cult following.

Hasn't he won Oscars?

Pacific Rim is exactly what people wanted. Robots beating the shit out of monsters.

I think I'm the only person on the planet who genuinely enjoyed Crimson Peak.

You do know he’s directed more films than those right

Aesthetics and ideas are a big part of why I enjoy movies—well, that and characters, and character creation is as much or more a job for writers and actors as it is for directors. I don’t necessarily enjoy everything Del Toro has done, but I can’t say that about any director.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
IMO most of the time the plot is weaker than the visuals, but sometimes for works like Pacific Rim, it's adequate. PR was all about robots vs. monsters, and it was a great popcorn flick. Pan's Labyrinth was a more brutal version of your bog standard portal fantasy but honestly, the visuals meant it transcended the basic plot. Crimson Peak was, IMO, a fairly decent gothic but I think it was mis-marketed and people expected a horror story or something. Haven't seen Shape of Water.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
idk if i’d Say overrated considering he’s only been hyped up until recently. But I don’t disagree in terms of his style. He makes pretty movies. That’s it. Stprywise Shape of Water was a mess. Pretty to look at but by god was it a boring mess.

Devil’s Backbone feels like his only movie that managed to have both a well told story and good aesthetics. and Obligatory RIP Silent Hills because his style would have been excellent in a video game format.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I 100% agree. BUT. That is why I was all in on his Haunted Mansion movie. It's one of my all time favorite attractions at Disney and it has a very weak storyline but amazing theming so gtd is a natural for it. The Hatbox Ghost was supposed to be a big part of it. I'm sad it's in limbo

Have another WRONG. Everything I've watched from him was good.

Eh. He's not my cup of tea, but I can see why other people like his stuff.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Pan's Labyrinth is excellent, though?

Huh.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I've only ever watched Hellboy and Mimic and I haven't really wanted to watch any of his other stuff, but that seems a little harsh to me.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
He's alright. I still don't want to fuck that fish, though.

Wait OP, when you say he's good with aesthetics and ideas but less so with everything else, what's 'everything else'? The actual fleshing out of his ideas (of which aesthetics is a part of)?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
I agree... I very much agree...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think he's a little overrated, or rather some of his biggest productions are, but he has made good films too. I liked "The Devils Backbone" very much; it's somewhat quiet and introverted for a horror flick, but if you immerse yourself, it's very memorable.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Pan's labyrinth is a masterpiece. Fight me.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. The way he (probably) instructs the actors is weird too, because the characters he/they build don't act even remotely human, and I'm not saying they're super dramatic or larger than life, I wouldn't mind that, but that they seem wooden and awkward.
