Not... really? Believe it or not, the percentage of white guys who are super racist actually has decreased since the 1890s.

Machen and Lovecraft were both pronouncedly racist even for their times (or, in Machen's case, I guess, fascism-support-y). It's really not just a case of different baselines.

Again, not really. Profoundly racist? Sure. But it was considered unremarkable at the time. A bit of a quirk, but hardly past the bounds of what was considered socially acceptable.

That's a different standard

They could be significantly more racist than was normal at the time, and still not be so racist that it was socially unacceptable
