Bewitched remake

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
So apparently, they are making a new Bewitched for ABC, by the creator of Black-ish and Samantha is going to be black and Darrin is going to be white. I don't know how closely they are going to follow the original series, but it seems like this could have unfortunate implications that wouldn't be as present if it were reversed or both were black. They could, of course, be playing into those implications to then avert them.

I'd be more worried that they were planning to make the series dark, murderous, and 'deep'...
Maybe because I'm not american- but why would being an interracial couple be a big deal nowadays?

Has racism against interracial couples completely disappeared outside of the U.S., then? How nice for the rest of the world.

...Dude. It's a television show.
Yeah, I can honestly say the majority of what I know about my country/community, that it really isn't going to be a glorified issue here.

The fact you don't think people can accept the idea of two people being married (on a sitcom!), just because they don't share the same forefathers is a serious problem... The idea that you were both sarcastic and disbelieving that I could be, (still am) confused by the stigma of them being different races really makes me worry.
I know some americans have a problem grasping that other countries might be a little bit different than you- and /I know/ that america seems set on ending the world, but fuck, if you're so far gone, why not get people to like the show, rather than gossip on the internet about it.

The problem isn't interracial couples, it's that in the case of Bewitched, the woman in the relationship is literally a witch. Making the witch character a black woman and leaving the "normal" husband white is where the bad implications would happen. The original series could already be considered an Unfortunate Implications metaphor for interracial couples (Samantha's family dislikes Darrin's family for not being magical, and whenever Samantha doesn't attempt to "hide" her "race" -- i.e. uses her witch powers -- it ends up causing trouble) Why make it even more blatant?

I meant most of my comment as a hope that they don't rewrite the series to make it gruesome...

I always assumed that her mother was written as one of those unwanted in-law type of characters. It's been a while since I last watched it, and even then I could only catch an episode every once in a while. If anything, I figured most of it came because of the era. Rather than him keeping her away from her witchcraft, she was just happy to live her life in accordance to her husband;; (its been so long though that i might be forgetting a lot of what happened)

I just have a hard time taking the concept that her family disapproving of her placing her craft on the backburner for the man she loves, is somehow an equivalent to her race... Like, it's not like she could integrate him into her society, so she attempted to live in his instead. Her magic going wrong happened regardless, I might be wrong, but I figured it more as a character trait then anything- its not like she could be perfect, and the show needed to create episodes somehow;;
(im probably missing the point again, it seems to be a habit of mine honestly, so sorry in advance man;;)

It wasn’t infortunate implications, it was subtext. You couldn’t actually put an interracial couple on TV back then.

NAYRT, but I think the unfortunate implications part comes from the "Samantha's totally fine with giving up being a witch to make Darrin happy and when she does witchy things trouble ensues" part. If we're using them as an interracial couple metaphor, the implications of that become unfortunate.

ayrt

It's still kind of a big deal in some places, but that's not actually what I was talking about, otherwise I wouldn't have specifically mentioned the reverse (meaning a black Darrin and white Samantha). I was talking about the connection of witchcraft to a black woman which relates to a few stereotypes and the way Darrin tended to treat Samantha and her witchcraft in the original show.

Yeah;;
Really though, I meant my initial comment as more of a joke. Given the media seems to be taking lighthearted series and making them dark and depressing- (like Sabrina, Archie, and even Charmed...) I didn't watch all of the original Bewitched as a whole, but the episodes I caught were always so fun loving. I'd just really hate to see the revamp twist yet another series into some dark, and angsty place...;;

I misunderstood what you were saying there, so I am sorry about that;; I guess because witchcraft is (from what I understand) based on paganism, which is (from what I remember;;) more of a northern english form of belief- I just didn't connect the dots...;;
And unless they do decide to change the entire setting of the series, I thought the whole witch thing wasn't supposed to be evil...

(and to be fair, if they were hiring by skill and capability then they should be allowed to play the role;; I think i understand where you're coming from, but well, yeah)
