The haters have certainly narrowed the fandom for me. I've got my niche and that's where I'm staying.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd agree with you, except that far too many people interpret ANY level of criticism as hate. This isn't just true for Star Wars, it's fandom in general. You can say, "Taylor Swift's music isn't really my thing" and someone will pop out of nowhere ranting about Swift's "haters" and how awful they are.

Personally, I enjoyed The Last Jedi a lot. But I don't think it's without its flaws, and it's annoying that fandom can't have a calm, civil discussion about it without one side bringing out the misogynistic ranting and the other side refusing to acknowledge that anyone might have a non-misogynistic reason for not loving the film.

^^ this.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, but one of those sides is a direct reaction to the other starting it. If there WERE more civil discussion, people like OP would be less wary about discussing the film with other fans.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
1) Yes, I'm aware that one is a reaction to the other. Nothing I said suggests otherwise.

2) Just because it's a direct reaction doesn't mean it's the ONLY possible reaction, nor does it justify treating legitimate criticism as if it's misogynistic ranting. People don't HAVE to overreact.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's natural to be suspicious of people being misogynistic when it happens constantly

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
You're only saying that because you're being a misogynist.

Wait, did that not make sense? It's because there's a difference between being wary of people's motives when you actually have something to base your suspicions upon, and seeing the misogynist boogeyman around every corner. When someone has reasoned supports for why they didn't love TLJ, then no, it's not "natural" to assume that they are motivated solely by sexism. It's paranoid.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I agree! I'm talking about situations where you don't have the "reasoned supports for why they didn't love TLJ" piece of the puzzle.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree 100%. The racist and sexist criticisms and the OTT hate it's received has managed to stifle not only the people that liked it, but the ones who had genuine criticisms. I'm the same as you now; I just back away from any discussions on it.

Objectively, the font/colour combination for this secret wasn't the best idea.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
this secret made me long for transcript!anon to be sure

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I'm not crazy of secret design where the font obscures the whole picture (lookin' at you, #5!) but if you must do it, outline the text so it stands out a little more.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooor, you could say the fans have ruined the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. I have been a Star Wars fan since childhood, but I am pretty much done with the fandom. It seems to be made up of the whiniest, most unpleaseable assholes. I still hate the prequels, but more and more, I sympathize with George Lucas. I honestly wonder if after making the deal where he turned over the rights to Star Wars, if he didn’t grab his check, leap into his red corvette, and sped off into the sunset shouting, “They’re your problem now, suckers!”

Because the fandom is the worst. That’s why.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that the haters have ruined the sequel fandom. As someone who didn't like TLJ but liked TFA, it frustrates me because I would like to talk about the movie flaws (mostly because analyzing movie flaws in tremendously fun for me - I really enjoyed all the critique of the Hobbit for instance), but any time I do, it ends up with other people shouting at each other.

I don't mind the nostalgia hate (people who didn't like what happened to Luke, for instance) but I am so upset that people who are "on my side" would be so vile as to push an actress off social media, and I hate that they're so mean about Kathleen Kennedy and Adam Driver and everyone. I don't want to be lumped in with those people. I've been turned off the sequel trilogy entirely, and keep to the other parts of SW fandom where it's easier to find conversation.

I'm the opposite. Loved TLJ, didn't really like TFA. For a lot of reasons, mostly boiling down to the fact that it didn't even try to do anything new and was a major rehash of ANH. With TLJ, not everything worked (though most of it did for me), but at least they were trying new things.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Okay? Not really seeing how this is relevant to the discussion of TLJ haters. I personally don't care that TFA was a rehash, and trying new things doesn't matter if they don't work. I bet you could've guessed as much from my comment, and your perspective is hardly unique.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't work for you. Most of the new ideas worked great for me. I loved it.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Which is exactly what I said.

I really so believe that opinions on movies are subjective. But I've just seen too many sexist/racist hate of this movie. I've seen too many haters who think their hate means the movie is objectively bad and the creators are terrible people. At this point, whenever I see someone start hating on this movie, I tune them out and judge them. This fandom has just ruined the chance for any discussion between people who like it and don't. The haters have ruined the fandom.
