Let me guess: you invented the internet too?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhhhh cmon cut em some slack. They probably didn't invent it (and obviously, it would have been far harder to actually be queer) but it also probably would be extremely isolating to imagine all this stuff and to think all this stuff without access to fandom, without access to the Internet. I feel for them.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Then they should have been more clear with their wording. If they're complaining about small towns or limited access or whatever, then say so. I totally understand that POV.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think it is reasonable enough wording. At least, I feel like I got what they were going for.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
And stopped it too.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
OP might not have chosen the best wording, but we knew what they meant. It's not necessary to be a jerk about it and adds nothing to the discussion.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
+1

When I read the secret I though, "Someone's going to be a dick about the wording in the comments," and welp, I wasn't wrong. :/

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
+2. I got it too at the first read, don't know why people need to be like that.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Guys - it is possible that OP could be like 70! There was actually a time before slash.

What a horrible thought - a time before slash...

driveby facts:
"Line drawing by Gerry Downes, in the first K/S slash zine, Alternative : Epilog to Orion, 1976."

Wtf does this even mean

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Obviously you are not of an age to understand. I'm old - I get it.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, I’m an old lady I got it.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
My understanding is: When OP was a kid, they liked to tell themselves stories where their favorite characters kissed each other. But they didn't live in a time, or a place, where they had access to fandom, or fanfiction, or queerness as a concept, and so they convinced themselves they were doing something wrong, and stopped, and now can't start again.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this is how I read it too, but it took me three re-reads to get there. Very poorly worded secret.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this was me as a kid. I did eventually read some books with queer characters, but then I thought queerness was this awesome but fictional concept. It was a huge surprise when I went to university and found out that lesbians were an actual thing (and yes, I am one myself!)

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
It's a terrible thing to grow up in such an oppressive existence. I'm sorry. But it's also never too late to open your mind to new ways of thinking, OP.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I sympathize. Probably you don't have the same time or energy to put into fandom you'd have had in your teens, but at least you can enjoy some of the material? Like fanart or the odd fic?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool to know you are an ancient Greek anon. Do you ship Achilles/Patroclus as well?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-04 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Just wanting dudes to bone doesn't make it slash or fandom in any reasonable sense
