There's plenty of middle ground between saying, "Hello I am your new best friend tell me where you live so we can hang out!" and only leaving kudos and reviews, though. I met some of my best friends through comments on my fanfic. They liked my writing, we got to talking about fandom and found other common ground, and 10+ years later, we're still friends. Livejournal was still around then, however. That made it easier to make friends separately from just interacting via reviews.

LJ is still around. But yeah, not as active anymore.

No need to be shy, OP, you are always welcome to message me.

I write some really obscure stuff and a person has just left me a kind comment on one of my fics and we've struck up a convo and I'm in heaven - it's like what LJ used to be like. I miss those days so much.

I miss the LJ days too, anon.

Agreed. The site had its issues, but LJ was such a big part of my early fandom life and I made friends that I still talk to nearly every day. I also miss the more casual acquaintances... people who I didn't necessarily talk to one-on-one, but who frequently commented and we'd joke around and just... shoot the breeze. I miss that so much.

This is a really well-designed secret

Scrolling down to say this!

Contact them!

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I met a few of my best friends through contacting them! You don't have to go into a lot of detail, just send a private message or email. I messaged them on AIM or MSN (this was way way back, if you couldn't tell). None of us saw each other in person much - we were too far apart. But we were/are, for all intents and purposes, "real life" friends.

My only word of caution is that people aren't always how you imagine them to be. But it can't hurt to give it a shot. :)

This is excellent advice, OP. Including the last bit. I've had one or two encounters with authors whose writing I enjoyed and... well, let's say that sometimes it's disappointing to meet your heroes. But it's worth the risk in making new friends!

I agree with the people saying go for it, OP. I enjoy corresponding with the people who take the time to comment on my stories... and when I used to RP, I ended up developing a friendship with my favorite RP partner that resulted in me going to visit her overseas. We have since drifted apart (fandom drift, sigh) but that was a once-in-a-lifetime thing I got to do with this person I never would've met without that fandom connection. You never know what can happen!

TBH OP, I made some of my best friends because people enjoyed my fics and talked with me/followed me on social media. That's even how I met my fiancee! Most writers are flattered to meet someone as long as you're not creepy about it.

Leave them a detailed review and hope they'll reply. Message them. Ask if they have a Discord account (or other options) and if they'd like to chat with you about their fic there. Do it. I would probably die of happiness if one of my loyal kudos-ers and/or reviewers liked my fics so much that they wanted to discuss them in detail elsewhere or even in the comments section. I mean, comments already make my day, getting to actually discuss the fic in depth would be a dream come true. Not to mention if I got to talk about the fic ideas that I have but am not likely to actually write. DO. IT.
