I met a few of my best friends through contacting them! You don't have to go into a lot of detail, just send a private message or email. I messaged them on AIM or MSN (this was way way back, if you couldn't tell). None of us saw each other in person much - we were too far apart. But we were/are, for all intents and purposes, "real life" friends.

My only word of caution is that people aren't always how you imagine them to be. But it can't hurt to give it a shot. :)

This is excellent advice, OP. Including the last bit. I've had one or two encounters with authors whose writing I enjoyed and... well, let's say that sometimes it's disappointing to meet your heroes. But it's worth the risk in making new friends!
