I don't care for Lois McMaster Bujold's heroines. They're... fine, I guess in some otherwise spiffy novels. But they are all a minor variation of super-smart, super-beautiful, and super-classy, whose only bad decision is trusting a male idiot. If they make her happy to write then I'm glad she's having fun.

It's just that she *could* be writing...

Cheerful airhead girls who are actually pretty competent and super loyal like Ivan;

Elusive, tricksy, secretly sad girls like Byerly;

Wrecked and incandescent girls like Miles.

I WANT WRECKED AND INCANDESCENT

*cough*

I want to know what a wrecked and incandescent character is like. A broken lightbulb?

Nayrt - Miles is a glorious mess of a human being. He makes the most incredible plans, and maybe some of them go up like firework factories, but gods what a sight.
And then, of course, some of them *work*.
Also, in the first chapter of his first book, he broke both his legs for the sake of pride. So y'know. He's quite a character.

In the context of the series, raised with crippling, painful health problems in a culture which idolises health and beauty, brilliant, constantly trying to live up to the standards he thinks his hypercompetent parents have set, boiling with a charm honed by years of childhood stuck having to ask people to do things for him...

As an adult, prone to getting stuck with weird and dramatic problems, finding weird and wonderful solutions, and occasionally starting cultural forest fires.

If Richard III were a sweet boy honestly doing his best, you would have something like Miles Vorkosigan.

I think there's some variation, but yeah. Ekaterin isn't quite from the same mold as Cordelia and Fawn is even more different. But clearly the author's heart is in writing male characters, and they have a rich, delightful variety her female characters lack.

You've reminded me of how amazing Bujold's male characters are. Miles is one of my favorite protagonists of all time, hands down... and Ivan is one of my favorite supporting characters. I also love his mother, though... and this is blasphemy... I think Cordelia's a little overrated. She's great in the few books she takes a larger role in but she disappears off the radar pretty quickly and only makes cameo appearances.

What about Ista from Paladin of Souls, though

Argh, I found Ista annoying in Paladin. "The only thing wrong with my old life was the men in it" Ista. Well. And the divinely inspired madness, there's that. But she was far from charitable to the guy who let himself be drowned to try and lift a curse and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Her interactions with the Bastard were super fun, though.

IDK, I feel like the total emotional fucked-ness of that whole situation kind of justifies that. I imagine I'd find it incredibly difficult to be charitable too, if I were her.

You do make a good point about the situation being deeply weird.

Ah well.
