I hate gore, but I can find plenty of horror to watch. The Babadook, It Follows, The Witch, Get Out, The Others, The Wailing, and Under the Shadows. None of them are lovecraftian, but they are good.

the Others! Loved it.

"Horror is scarier when you don't show"

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm fine with gore, but you can build up the suspense & create a really terrifying atmosphere & feel to the film without ever becoming a gore-fest.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, OP. I love horror that pays attention to creating the atmosphere as opposed to jump scares or gore.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You could make a faithful adaptation of a Lovecraft story, it just wouldn't be very good

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
But OP isn't asking or even talking about a 100% faithful adaptation. Just one that wasn't gory.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness exist.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think it's possible a Lovecraft fan might want adaptations that are more recent than 25+ years ago?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I've not seen them but from the last decade there has been Cthulu, AM1200, and The Void.

Call of Cthulu was a game made this year. From what I've seen it isn't gory at all.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I got the impression OP was particularly wanting movie adaptations, since that's what the secret specifically mentions.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Okay? All but 1 of those are movies.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Are the others adaptations of Lovecraft's work or inspired by them?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Call of Cthulu definitely falls into the gory category. The opening scene has the main character waking up in a pool of blood and intestines.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
In the Mouth Of Madness is awesome!

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true. On the other hand there's also the part about wanting people to go and read the original books? So IDK

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I love atmospheric stuff, but as long as it still explains the story through not telling/showing, and don't do that bullshit 'it's all up to you what happened!' cop out shit. No. I want a demon, or a ghost, or it to have been a real person all along.

You can show horror through non-gore/atmosphere/good story telling and still have proper endings and not lose that horror vibe. If you can't, then you're not a good story teller to begin with.

I'm so so on Lovecraft, but *yes*, so sick of horror being basically a gore-fest or torture porn. No thank you.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed! Which is why The Devil's Backbone rates miles over Guillermo del Toro's other (horror) flicks.

I just wish we'd get more adaptations that focused on his better works. Lovecraft was phenomenal at building atmosphere and at subtle implied horror, and a lot of his stories have very modern themes could be adapted perfectly into a new movie.

At the Mountains of Madness -> Think Alien or any of the other dozen sci-fi movies where you get the hero isolated and dealing with alien horrors beyond their comprehension. Except in Antarctica at the research station.

The Color out of Space -> Erin Brokovich with a horror spin. In rural NE America a meteor hits near a small town, and a blight starts spreading from the crater, leeching out life and color. Is it chemicals? Radiation? Some weird virus? Then animals turn up mutilated. Then people start going missing, and others are going mad.

I also prefer atmosphere over guts in spooky movies. But with Lovecraft... like, what do you think Nyarlathotep’s gonna do, tickle people?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Did you see "Die Farbe"? I haven't so I can't say if its gory or not but I heard its a really good movie.

This is why I love Asian horror movies, especially Japanese ones. A majority of them are all about the suspense, with no (or very little) gore.

I recently saw a movie called 'The Endless'.

Two brothers who escaped a UFO cult receive a video in the mail that entices them back to the camp. Very good movie, spooky and mysterious with very little gore (there is one scene that involves blood). Would recommend to anyone who loves mind-twisty type movies.

I enjoyed that movie. A very good example of mystery/horror that doesn't lose anything by not being gory/still explaining what happened somewhat.
