126. I don't care if you're a troll secret. Charles is the most manry, amazing character in the show. Though I much prefer younger!Charles. Him in the flashbacks? Holy shit, my screen has never been humped so furiously.

138. I've seen slash for Josh Davis, and since my highschool choir teacher was his mother, and my sister has worked with him before when he was giving swim camps. So uh... yeah, I'm feeling you there with rps being a whole different thing when you've met the person. It's weird and a little icky.

178. Okay. And that's that much worse than the anti-semitism and other blatant racism in the other movies, how? I found the hutt character extremely offensive, but no more than, say, Jar Jar, Nute Gunray, or Watto. If you're just now seeing and being offended by Star Wars including horrible, deeply prejudiced stereotypes, well, welcome to the party, but don't act like it wasn't there before. But yes, effeminate men = evil is pretty terrible. But it's not really noticeably worse than any other horrible hollywood prejudice stereotypes, when you get right down to it.

Who are these people and why are they racist/anti-semetic? Well, I know Jar Jar, kind of, never watched the movie... Basically all my familiarity with Star Wars comes through the KOTOR games and having seen the movies as a kid. I'm curious now.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Jar Jar, I think, is racist because the way he speaks is similar to the negative stereotype of a black slave, or at least that is what I have heard. Watto I have never really reflected on, but because he has a big schnoz and likes money I guess he could be a shot at the jews? Or maybe his accent is offensive somehow? Iunno really. Nute Gunray is someone I don't even think I've ever heard of.

[identity profile] darth.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I vaguely recall hearing somewhere that Nute Gunray is a negative stereotype of the Chinese. I don't remember why, and I'm positive my grammar is completely off in my first sentance. OH WELL.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Nute Gunray (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Nute_Gunray) is from a race of aliens who resemble and dress very similar to Asians. He has "slanted eyes". His voice somewhat resembles bad dubbing common in older kung-fu movies.

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as Watto goes, I think the tv tropes article (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpaceJews) might just show it best. He's an incredibly unlikeable character... and has a lot of old-fashioned anti-semitic stereotypes to him. I'm sometimes willing to believe that that one might be one of those accidental sort of stereotypes, but when you get to the Neimoidians, Nute Gunray in particular, it's harder to believe that.

The Neimoidians (http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/List-of-Star-Wars-races%23Neimoidian#N) are characterized as hive-minded, greedy traders with noticeably heavy asian accents and tilted eyes. Their greed allows them to be manipulated by a white guy (Palpatine) into letting Palpatine do what he wants with the galaxy. So even though it's a white dude who causes all the problems, when he's using Jar Jar and the Trade Federation to accomplish it, one begins to wonder what the implications of it all are.

And while you can argue that the imperials were given British accents, I think it's interesting that that has actually been retconned into just being a "Coruscanti" accent, making it posh and high-class. A totally different implication, all things considered.

Dear God, Star Wars has "blatant" anti-semitism and racism now? *facepalm* Unbelievable. People will get riled up over anything these days.

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, people will. But you know, commenting this with your actual journal would make you sound less like a troll and more like someone trying to discuss a topic. Oh, wait-

(Anonymous) 2008-08-27 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You know some people don't actually have LJs, right?

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
If you really think that most dissenting anonymous comments are left from people without LJs, you haven't been here long.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-28 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I've been here for ages, which is why I'm sick of people labelling anons as either cowards or trolls.

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, most of the time when you see someone commenting anon with something that no one logged in has been willing to say, yeah, they probably are a coward or troll.

If you're not? Good for you. But that doesn't change the fact that my assumption has a basis in simple statistics. Or that most people are going to make that same assumption.

You want to be freed from people guessing that you've got an LJ? Get one. It takes five minutes.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen more efemminate characters used as Comedic relief in Star Wars then as a villain. Aren't most of the Star Wars character archtypes based on flimsy stereotypes, anyways?

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you seen the new Clone Wars thing? There's, uh... a gay Cajun Hutt. I'm really kind of not kidding. I walked out of the movie going "huh. Did I really see that?"

The OP, however, is refering to this stereotype (http://www.afterelton.com/archive/elton/movies/2005/3/gayvillains.html), more than they are to Star Wars in general. Effeminate men in movies are portrayed as sinister, sneaking cowards who would rather hide their actions behind others, while foppishly lounging around and sneering with limp wrists. All things concerned, the gay villain is put there to give people a natural aversion to the character.

But now I'm confused, what's this with effeminate characters in Star Wars? I didn't recall that many existing.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I saw Clone Wars. I thought Ziro acted more like the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland, more than a homosexual male. Perhaphs it was the hookah and neon lights that threw me off? lol

There are many effeminate Star Wars characters; Bib Fortuna and C-3PO, for example. I noticed some others, but I don't feel like spending the day going through wookiepedia and grabbing names. XD

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what it always seemed like to me.

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The one I'm refering to is just what the OP was talking about - http://www.afterelton.com/movies/2008/8/theclonewars has more information, if you haven't seen Clone Wars yet.

I'm not the OP, and uh, I consider myself a fan of Star Wars. But if the OP is going to start talking about real world prejudice with Star Wars aliens showing through, there's a lot more to be mentioned than what they find so unforgiveable.
