Her being "of age" (I use quotes because 14 is way too low) doesn't change the fact that she's objectified throughout most of the show. I might've thought there was a deeper meaning to this, but Rei is also nothing but a sex object.

I didn't say she wasn't objectified. I said she wasn't a "loli". The only other thing I said about her was that she was a good character. She's like one of the only realistic portrayals of a bipolar individual in anime.

The fact that she was just something to drool over to Anno cheapened her so much. She could've been a great character if she didn't have the misfortune of being an anime character. Just because she switched between screaming insults and hopeless sobbing (when she wasn't having to show her tits for the male gaze) doesn't really make her good, imo.

Wow, you're obviously really trying to bait me with this one. Way to generalize an entire genre of anime (a very long-running, prevalent, successful and popular genre at that).

I'm only saying that yeah, I guess she's a good character if we're comparing her to characters in anime similar to Eva. But not compared to something like a Faulkner character. I just don't think she should be hailed as so awesome and good just because sometimes she gets to take a break from being a lust object to cry about her past. Most respectable artistic creators (even some anime ones) treat their creations and audience with enough integrity that they don't spend 3/4ths of a story objectifying a character, then quickly try to pass her off as complex and disturbed.

But you know, if the point behind it all was to make guys have a hard-on, only to shock them in the end with the fact that she's actually a person and not just something to make them happy in the pants, I can respect that trick a little. I don't know if it worked too well, though, because Asuka and Rei went on to become two of the biggest objectified sex symbols in anime.

It's a cartoon, not literature. I have yet to see a character in a cartoon of any kind who could rival a great literary character.

By the way, you're doing it wrong.
I don't give a shit that a cartoon uses someone with boobies to sell model kits or whatever the fuck. (Cartoons for women do the same thing with male characters, by the way.) I care more about how much I make compared to a man working in the same field as me. You know, important shit that actually affects my life.
