The failed pilots were a shortened sixth season. In a way, it felt like they formally gave up after season five, then they turned around and tacked on the sixth season.

*looks up (http://epguides.com/Highlander/)* Yeah, the three episode arc where Richie died was the end of the fifth season/ beginning of the sixth season. So we're picking around the same point.

I think the problem with further movies was the first one opened and closed the whole mythos so perfectly. Each subsequent movie had to nullify the end of the previous one to make things continue. Connor was the last immortal, oops, one more. Connor was the last immortal, oops, one more.

With the series, they only backed up a little, and at least they picked a new central character. The first movie was largely respected by the series. But then when Duncan joined Connor in the fourth movie, they disrespected the series canon for the movie. That bugged me.

*snort* Anyway, once upon a time "Highlander" was one of my favorite series. It's a shame they couldn't ended it a little sooner. It would have been nice to end it on a relative up note.

... they could also have continued it without making it suck. :( Six seasons isn't that long, they just seemed to have given up, or to have forgotten the rules of their own show. I hate it when a series rewrites its own rules, especially when it's a fantasy-in-the-real-world thing like Highlander. Add more magical stuff, and you ruin it. It's enough to have immortal people trying to kill each other to be the last one one day), you don't have to bring the end of the world into it.... cheesy. :
