yuletide woes

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
it's my first time on yuletide, there're only 10 days left and i still don't know how i'll manage
i match with my recipient on only one fandom, they gave several suggestions and i could write like 4 of them
but i don't know how many words i ca squeeze out of each idea and whether i'll meet the 1,000 limit or not
i don't know which one to choose and write
and it's getting a bit late to try every single one of them
and see which draft works best
help
i'm fucked

Pick one at random, write something, and then go from there

Re: yuletide woes

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
you're kind of a jerk for taking on a commitment and not following through with it

They still have more than a week, maybe put down the pitchfork and the burning torch, sheesh.

Re: yuletide woes

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
it's still mean if they don't come up with anything and someone who DID get their shit together in time gets nothing in return.

Let's be clear - you are talking about a hypothetical situation that hasn't happened yet. Would it make sense if I said you were a jerk for robbing all those orphans? I mean the ones you could potentially rob sometime in the future, for which you'd definitely be a jerk if you did.

Re: yuletide woes

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
the odds of me robbing orphans are a lot more slim than the odds of this person not finishing their yuletide despite having four (4) prompts.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. So you think it's reasonable to go around insulting people for misdeeds you think they might have a good shot at committing sometime in the future?

Also, you seemed concerned about their recipient possibly receiving nothing. Does shaming the one person who can prevent this from happening going to serve as a good motivation to fulfill their commitment, do you think?

Re: yuletide woes

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
if they default NOW, there's time for a pinchhitter to come in and fulfill the request. if they hem and haw much longer, the assignment gets NOTHING. you don't think that's unfair?

Or they could write something

something I have pretty much no faith in happening at this point

I never even hinted I thought it wasn't unfair to the recipient. So yes, if they don't receive a fic because the anon doesn't deliver, that would be unfair for the recipient. I see you don't care to answer my questions:

Chill. There's a safety net of pinch hitters, because Yuletide knows that sometimes this stuff happens.

That said, good luck, OP!

Ten days is a lot of time! You can do it. Start by writing down the four ideas you think you could write, then add as many plot points/etc to each of them. Pick the one the has the most to work with. You could also try all four, starting with one and not spending more than two days on it if it's not going anywhere before trying the next one.

Re: yuletide woes

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Could you combine two or more of them? Also, it's actually 16/17 days until reveals, so if you could just get the rough draft done in time, there's still a week to get a beta and make it nice. But you should seriously start today.

Re: yuletide woes

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Choose at random, flip a coin. If you feel disappointed that you got #3 instead of #2, then do #2. What's more important is that you write something for one of them. Don't let indecision paralyze you.

Just default instead of flailing. The sooner you do, the sooner they can get the requests to someone else.

(And if you do manage to pull something out of your ass by the upload deadline, you can always post it as a treat.)

Honestly I'm barely paying attention to the Christmas season. No decorations for us this year. I've barely been out of the house in the past three weeks. My mom will be home before Christmas, thankfully, but we're still not sure about my dad. It just doesn't really feel like Christmas this year. I think we are just doing gift cards/money for presents (though I did get my sister a set of bath bombs).

you... you do realize this is about the fic exchange... not the holiday... right?

Given the title, I thought it was an invitation for general Yultide woes.

Not a secret, in the general comments section. And the person's comment was about their own Yuletide woes, that was the title of the thread, and that is a pretty traditional way of doing that sort of thread on FS.

Can you do a "five times" for that fandom? That's only 200 words minimum per idea, and you've already got four ideas.

You can do it, anon, one way or another.

It's your first time, so I'm going to go easy on you here: please default now if you honestly aren't getting a spark for anything. There's still time for a pinch-hitter to take over so that your recipient still gets something.
