It's a very thin line - for me - between liking the relationship, and feeling the character is being taken advantage of. Works better for me if both characters are 50% sweet and 50% grump.

I do like a sweetheart/asshole pairing where the asshole character is protective/caring of their partner even if they've got a gruff or mean exterior... I get where you're coming from on not wanting it to feel like a really sweet character is just being taken advantage of!
