It is so hard to find them though. Fics have tags. Books have vague summaries.

Lol, imagine if Goodreads was as usable and searchable as AO3

Goodread for me is going, "Oh shit. I accidentally clicked on Goodreads in my bookmarks instead of Reddit."

I basically use Goodreads as a way to keep track of what I've been reading. I don't find it useful for figuring out if I want to read something because I noticed early on with some works that a lot of 5 star reviews were coming from blind fanboys/fangirls of the author and 1 star reviews aren't great either because they come from people who don't articulate why they didn't like something, they just rage dump in the review space.

The list system isn't great because it feels like anyone can add anything? I've been into lists of my favourite genres and thought "that doesn't sound very sci-fi/thriller/horror/etc" or seen a book listed that I know definitely isn't at all in that particular genre.

It helps to have friends on Goodreads that read a lot and have similar tastes. Things they've marked "To Read" or reviewed highly can easily go on your own "To Read" pile to check out from the library or Overdrive.

I have a few fandom friends on Goodreads and since I already know we match pretty well in fandom, we seem to match pretty well on Goodreads.

Oh yeah I agree. My friends definitely help because a couple of them have extremely similar tastes to me. I'm essentially in a friend bubble on Goodreads most of the time but whenever I try to venture out of it, I'm often disappointed.
