I would argue that more of the male characters were tied up (and, yeah, there were too many love triangles) and it seemed like, to me, the romantic aspect was more important, character-wise, to many of them.

Well...yeah? Because there are more male characters than female and two pairs of them are in a love triangle with the same female character.
