Aren't all the male characters also tied up in various love interests?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-17 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Not all of them, I don't think. There are more male characters than female characters, aren't there?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-17 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The only one who isn't is Will. And that is because he has been too busy being tortured.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Poor Will!
(Also if he turns out to be gay, an unsettling trend)

(Anonymous) 2018-12-17 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Mains (from Wikipedia):

Joyce Byers*
Jim Hopper*
Mike Wheeler*
Eleven*
Dustin Henderson*
Lucas Sinclair*
Nancy Wheeler*
Jonathan Byers*
Karen Wheeler*
Martin Brenner
Will Byers
Steve Harrington*
Max Mayfield*
Billy Hargrove*
Bob Newby*
Sam Owens

I put a star by the ones with any sort of romantic tension/interest portrayed onscreen.

Which leaves Will (mostly incapacitated both seasons) and the research guys.

Brenner and Owens are not in the show enough to be counted as mains, imo. They are definitely supporting characters.

Whoa. Why is there a star next to Dustin?? He's not being set up with anyone...is he?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-17 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
He had a sort of love triangle with Max and Lucas.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-17 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
He was portrayed as crushing on Max, which put a strain on his friendship with Lucas.

Nope. Hopper's divorced, Will isn't, Steve isn't (anymore, LOL), Billy isn't unless he's getting on the side from Mrs. Wheeler. The various supporting characters like the doctors at the lab aren't, either.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-17 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hooper? Really? He's not in a romantic storyline?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-17 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hopper and Joyce are clearly being set up with each other. Steve was in a love triangle with at the beginning. Bill could hardly be called a main character. And I bet a lot of female doctors in the lab are also not in relationships.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Re: Hopper and Joyce - probably true, but I mentioned him because he isn't romantically involved with anyone for the majority of the series. And I said that Steve wasn't anymore. Billy I threw in for teh lulz. As for lab people, anon asked specifically about male characters.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-17 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
In that case, none of the characters from the shitty sisters episode were in relationships.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Dustin and Lucas had a season where they weren’t involved with it. As opposed to Max who feels like she was solely introduced for love interest related friction. Also it’s different because the male characters get arcs outside of who is gonna get the girl.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 01:43 am (UTC)(link)

You mean as opposed to... Eleven? Joyce?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
eleven and Joyce both could have had arcs without love interests. Yet they still got shoe horned into the role. When you have four female main characters and all of them get stuck in relationships when they could be independent of it that’s not a good thing.

Huh.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I would argue that more of the male characters were tied up (and, yeah, there were too many love triangles) and it seemed like, to me, the romantic aspect was more important, character-wise, to many of them.

Re: Huh.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well...yeah? Because there are more male characters than female and two pairs of them are in a love triangle with the same female character.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's not the point of your secret but I just want to take a sec and say:

Winona Ryder with an ax.

Yes.

I am one of the few who thinks Joyce is being handled just fine, but overall, fuck, there is too much of that kinda drama.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Joyce is great! And I thought her relationship with Bob was nice, and I liked him as a character too. Way too often, step-parent-ish figures are demonized, or they try way to hard to be the "buddy", but Bob took very different approaches to Jonathan (treated him more like a peer than a kid, because Jonathan is almost an adult) and Will (offered up words of wisdom/advice, like you'd do as a parent), and because of the way he acted with Jonathan and Will, I can 100% see why Joyce was in a relationship with him. He was a good guy, who cared about her and the boys, and unlike Hopper, didn't seem to have any baggage. #JusticeForBob

I agree - I love them all too but I could live without all the emphasis on love interests, especially in the kids. I also hated the idea that Eleven would be jealous of Max, especially after only seeing her for about ten seconds. Though I will grant that Eleven wasn't raised in a normal social atmosphere.
