Wait, there's a fandom for that? Is it mostly nostalgic? Or is it mostly about collecting? Or is that exactly what the drama's about?

There are definitely people who collect and some of the wank comes from nostalgia with people arguing if things were better when Pleasant Rowland (the founder) was in charge or if things changed for the better when Mattel bought the company. Pleasant stans like to stay that things were more heirloom-quality and historically accurate back in the day, but other people point out that there were a few items (like Felicity's windmill) that broke if you looked at them funny and that Mattel has made some nice, high-quality items that don't break if you sneeze. Plus, Mattel can't be totally at fault for making non-heirloom items since the toy laws. The current consensus seems to be that the company's going down the crapper because the outfits are getting skimpier and more expensive, the doll body fabric has been changed, the eyes have been changed and are more low-quality, and the wigs are getting thinner. The dolls are still hideously expensive, but not as high quality.

There was a lot of drama when the first black Girl of the Year was announced (the shiny, exclusive doll that gets a lot of attention because she's only available for a year). It was about damn time they got a black GOTY, but it was soon clear that Gabriela hadn't been intended to be the GOTY since she was just a Truly Me doll who had been pulled from the shelves, given a different outfit, and a half-assed collection. The intended GOTY had been Tenney, a white doll, who was released a month later as a contemporary character with a cohesive collection, a Disney tie-in, a new hand mold, and a boy doll to boot. People were understandably upset about this because Gabriela never really got her moment to shine and other people were saying that they should stop complaining because they finally got a black GOTY, so what more did they want?

There's also all the drama that goes down on Instagram. Recently, some troll was posting shit on Rebecca (the Jewish doll) posts about how Jews needed to convert. There's a creepy adult user who acts like she's best friends with much younger users and sends the kids who look up to her to harass users she doesn't like. Then there are users who beg for free stuff because they have no money, despite their last post being about their recent AG haul. It's bananas sometimes.

nayrt

Damn. I never knew how crazy it got. I never knew there was a fandom for this until FS posted a secret (or mentioned something in GC?). I remember saving up birthday and holiday and chore money to buy my doll. I wanna say it was 2002? 2003? the most I did was do her hair, play with friends, and try to make outfits for her. had no idea it went in that deep. Was it online at That time? i was a youngthing at the time, hanging out on dollmaker sites and whatnot.

I always hear that this fandom is dramatic as hell but have never been privy to any details. Any good scoops?

The Permapanties

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I replied to the above anon with some drama, but here's another one. Last year, AG decided that the dolls should come with sewn on underwear with the reason being that the kids lose underwear or something like that. This makes very little sense since they sell underwear sets for the dolls (at about ten bucks a pop), so a parent could just buy their kid more underwear if it got lost. People were throwing around all these theories as to why they would make such an asinine decision. Some people thought it was a cost-cutting measure, others thought it was because AG had expanded to the Middle East and maybe there was some modesty law there that decreed dolls needed to have sewn-on underwear (despite no evidence suggesting that dolls sold in those countries have their underwear sewn or painted on). The permapanties looked horrible with the newer, thinner body fabric and couldn't be covered with pants or swimsuits. Some of the dolls also looked like they had a dump in their undies due to the stuffing shifting. Around this time, AG also released a bathroom set with a toilet and people were wondering how exactly dolls were supposed to use the toilet if they couldn't pull down their undies. When people complained on their Facebook page, the person in charge of their social media account was very snarky and sometimes outright nasty to the people complaining and a lot of the negative comments were deleted, which further pissed people off. It was a massive shitstorm that actually got some press coverage and, after declining sales, AG declared that the dolls would no longer come with permapanties. If one had bought a doll with permapanties, one could also send the doll in for a free body replacement.

Okay, there's something about this that's just cracking me up :p. Not exactly the most common topic for a fandom to fight over, that's for sure :p.

Seriously, though, I can totally see where that whole thing would be an issue for real. This fandom sounds absolutely wild, and I'm sorry for those of you who just want to have your fun having to put up with all this ridiculous crap.

I always enjoy your stories, doll fandom anon! I couldn't imagine how doll fandom could be so wanky, but you told me, lol!

Glad you like them, anon! :) I do enjoy the positive aspects of the fandom, but the drama is definitely popcorn-worthy. I just never thought it'd get like that when I got my first doll.
