Re: Petty annoyances

I live in a very ethnically diverse city, so saying "Merry Christmas!" genuinely does feel a bit iffy (even though I'm atheist AF and I still LOVE Christmas). But at the same time, most of the people I come in contact with are retail workers or other people who don't get much time off this time of year, so saying "Happy Holidays!" feels more insensitive to me than saying "Merry Christmas." And saying "Best of the season to you!" is ok, I guess, but it's a bit cumbersome, and it feels kind of weird and old fashioned.

I just want to wish people seasonal merriness, darn it.

Honestly, I wouldn't say I'm annoyed about this, per se. I'm just a little bit frustrated is all.

I think people who get all offended about being wished a merry Christmas are stupid and I'm both an atheist and not a fan of Christmas myself. It's a seasonal well-wishing phrase usually coming from a place of goodwill. It won't kill anyone to just nod and say thanks and move on with their day. I think anyone who has the time snd energy to complain about this probably doesn't have any real problems in their life.

This is completely how I feel. It's an expression of goodwill (coming from the majority of people), not an assumption that you do (or MUST!!) celebrate what they celebrate.

Yeah, I think it's quite silly myself. But I still try to respect that maybe some people of other religions feel that Christmas is inherently a deeply religious thing, and thus feel like Christianity is being foisted on them. And, I mean, when I go back to my hometown that's like 99% white people, I feel comfortable just wishing pretty much everyone Merry Christmas (even though I'm sure some of the people there are Jewish), but only 49% of the population of my home city is of European descent, so I feel like the population of people who probably don't celebrate Christmas is big enough that...the whole thing is just a little bit more of a legitimate issue here.
