Petty annoyances

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-12-21 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
What small, petty things have annoyed you recently?

I stopped at Dairy Queen on the way home from work and got an oreo Blizzard. It ended up having a bunch of peppermint in it. I'm still annoyed because if I'd wanted peppermind, I would have ordered it.

I wanted to make banana bread, but the grocery store didn’t have any more super ripe bananas left for sale.

I have no idea who you are or where you live, but now I feel bad for throwing out my overripe bananas last night.

Don't feel too bad- I always save my bananas until they're like pitch black, just on the off chance I might make something out of them...;;

Not just recently, but I get really pissed when someone ends a negative opinion or argument with "lmao." For example: "It doesn't matter that you're not racist, you still benefit from white privilege lmao"

Doesn't matter how good their point is or not. "Lmao" ruins it every time.

I agree. Why would they even use that? How does laughter go with criticism? Just weakens whatever they are saying and makes it seem like they don't care and are just being silly.

NAYRT

The idea is that your opponent's position is so ridiculous that even having to take the time to refute it is funny

lmao

Subthread OP

I think you just nailed why I hate it. It's because it's hardly ever used in cases where the person's position actually is so obvious that having to state it is laughable. Take my example about white privilege. That's still a thing lots of people do need explained to them. You can't expect the average person to be woke enough to automatically know about it and its ties to racism. So using "lmao" to mock things like that is a bit like if a calculus professor described an equation to students having trouble understanding it and unironically ended with "I mean, duh." It's gaslighting people on their level of intelligence (or woke points)

Re: Subthread OP

(Anonymous) 2018-12-21 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
It really depends on the context for me. There are times when I think it's appropriate.

DA

I always thought it had to do with the person feeling awkward about having to explain something that by their (possible) standards, should be common knowledge...
Like they weren't sure if what they were responding to was a (very bad) joke or not?

you want petty I got petty

I don't celebrate christmas. every year I have to remind my family in very direct words, no hinting or playing just straight out, "I don't celebrate christmas so don't get me anything."

got a holiday card today from my sister that literally says "I know you don't celebrate but..." GIRL.

Went grocery shopping earlier and they were out of about half the stuff I needed. Which is my fault for waiting until so close to Christmas to go but it was still annoying because now I'm going to need to go to another store tomorrow and I'm kind of dreading having to deal with the crowds again.

And this is a super super dumb fandom related thing but...I get annoyed when I see people who admit they don't watch the show all the time comment on my OTP's relationship. "They argued this one time in this one episode I saw so clearly they hate each other and you're stupid for shipping them!" when it's obvious that most of their "arguments" are not actually serious, and even if they disagree from time to time that doesn't mean they hate each other. I mean, anyone who actually watches their interactions on a regular basis and hears them say I love you to each other constantly can't honestly believe they hate each other, even if they don't ship them.

I feel like on the fandom thing, the opposite could be said just as well;;
I almost felt guilty reading this because I have a habit of latching on to very specific things when it comes to my favourite characters/parings;;
I mean, I never go out of my way to say a paring should or shouldn't be like that- but I'll hold out until my dying day on my stupid points regardless of how far I've gotten through the show;;...

(and lets just say I can't finish a series to save my life;;)

I live in a very ethnically diverse city, so saying "Merry Christmas!" genuinely does feel a bit iffy (even though I'm atheist AF and I still LOVE Christmas). But at the same time, most of the people I come in contact with are retail workers or other people who don't get much time off this time of year, so saying "Happy Holidays!" feels more insensitive to me than saying "Merry Christmas." And saying "Best of the season to you!" is ok, I guess, but it's a bit cumbersome, and it feels kind of weird and old fashioned.

I just want to wish people seasonal merriness, darn it.

Honestly, I wouldn't say I'm annoyed about this, per se. I'm just a little bit frustrated is all.

Re: Petty annoyances

(Anonymous) 2018-12-21 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think people who get all offended about being wished a merry Christmas are stupid and I'm both an atheist and not a fan of Christmas myself. It's a seasonal well-wishing phrase usually coming from a place of goodwill. It won't kill anyone to just nod and say thanks and move on with their day. I think anyone who has the time snd energy to complain about this probably doesn't have any real problems in their life.

Re: Petty annoyances

(Anonymous) 2018-12-21 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
This is completely how I feel. It's an expression of goodwill (coming from the majority of people), not an assumption that you do (or MUST!!) celebrate what they celebrate.

AYRT

I think people who get all offended about being wished a merry Christmas are stupid

Yeah, I think it's quite silly myself. But I still try to respect that maybe some people of other religions feel that Christmas is inherently a deeply religious thing, and thus feel like Christianity is being foisted on them. And, I mean, when I go back to my hometown that's like 99% white people, I feel comfortable just wishing pretty much everyone Merry Christmas (even though I'm sure some of the people there are Jewish), but only 49% of the population of my home city is of European descent, so I feel like the population of people who probably don't celebrate Christmas is big enough that...the whole thing is just a little bit more of a legitimate issue here.

Those 'Christmas is about Christ!!" signs on peoples lawns this time of year. It's just so... passive aggressive. Like, standing on your porch yelling at people that they're celebrating something in the incorrect way.

Re: Petty annoyances

(Anonymous) 2018-12-21 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh- I was /so/ close to going all in...
But yeah, I agree.

Like, the entire belief that Christmas originated/is about/should have anything to do with Jesus/ literally annoys me to no end;; I mean, it's fine if people believe it, but by every means necessary, it just isn't true...

Re: Petty annoyances

That's weird;; I've never been to DQ myself, is it like a holiday thing? or just the wrong order?

When you think you put the spring bar completely in the slots in the toilet paper roll holder, but you did not.
