Nope, that's not how it works. Writing porn of real people is gross and disrespectful as hell. I'm a firm believer of do what you want as long as it's about fictional characters, but this is real people we are talking about.

This distinction just seems incredibly bizarre to me.

How much difference is there between writing straight-up porn without plot between two characters, and writing porn without plot between the actors who play them? What about actors who play characters based on themselves?

So every movie, book, etc written about real people (ie the Crown etc) is gross and disrespectful?

Op of comment - I only said that because every person who dislikes RPF seems to think that's all RPF fic writers do - just tweet celebs 24/7 with fic about them. As IF they do! I just wanted to get it in before someone else said it *rolls*

I'm the same with m/m ships. I got one or two m/f ships I liked in recent years so my heart is easy. Labyrinth and Strange Magic. I just need to find a f/f to ship... Idk I don't like any genderbend fics m/m -> f/f with my pairings so I guess gender does matter to me.

I mean, the first thing you did wrong was thinking you had to like a certain type of pairing to be "doing it right."

It's okay to love RPF. Just don't get it mixed up with reality and you're fine.

It doesn't matter if you're not shipping all the gender combinations. Just ship whatever grabs you. Shipping because you think you're supposed to or you think you need to ship *something* is just a ddilly waste of time.

A *LOT* of what I've been shipping in the 15 years I've been dabbling in fandom has been RPF. I started with Bandom, over a decade ago, and then spent years writing Motorsports fanfic.
RPF is fine, as long as people do it respectfully.
Ignore people giving you shit for it. They could just not do the thing they don't like, but they have to go out of their way to make others feel shitty, which, as far as I'm concerned, only means they're doing it for Purity Points, *which* makes them irrelevant.
As long as your approach to RPF doesn't hurt anybody, do whatever you want and be happy.
