NAYRT—I’ve got two blood relatives left who are both 30+ years older than me and one friend my own age. I haven’t made a new friend since grade school and have never even dated, much less had a significant other. If my friend and I have a falling out, at some point I could end up only buying presents for myself and my pets. In which case I’ll do my best to remember that other people being happy doesn’t mean I have to be miserable or try to spread it around.

It's nice to get nice things, and it's also easier to talk about in a quantifiable way than it is to talk about the joys of spending time with loved ones; it doesn't have as much complicated emotional baggage as spending time with loved ones; and it's in some ways more relevant to fandom.
