It's mainstream in fandom, but I'd say it's fringe in society as a whole.

I know how you feel because I have to continually remind myself that mainstream culture is not as batshit far left as fandom, or I'd definitely fall into a deep depression.

I think the average person is pretty moderate. I think most women have fathers, brothers, husbands, etc. who are good people, and they love them dearly and would be very sorry if they disappeared for even a day. I know I would.

The type of attitude you're describing is clearly born of abuse. Sometimes it may seem like abuse is the norm, but I don't think it is. I think most people do the best they can.
