Re: No one is here
(Anonymous) 2018-12-26 04:34 am (UTC)(link)and with regards to feminism, I think your interpretation of feminism is not necessarily correct as a result of that. Obviously, I can't generalize too much here, and there probably are feminists who think that men are intrinsically evil, but it's not something that you have to believe in order to be a feminist, nor is it really a mainstream view. The point is more that men (and women) are socialized in some really deeply-rooted ways that are deeply shitty to both genders, and also that society as a whole is structured in ways that are fundamentally inequitable and advantageous to men, and that this affects the way that all of us see the world and act in it.
And when it comes to something like "if all the men were gone" - I think the point is less that biological-masculinity is the actual cause of all those problems, and more that the existence of those deeply gendered structures, and men being around to act out those structures, has impacts on an everyday level even in ways that might be invisible to you or me. It's a testament to how pervasive and influential those social structures are, not to anything intrinsic in male nature. Men and women are socialized to believe in certain fundamental ideas and act in certain ways; men and women act within certain social structures; they make decisions based on those ideas and those structures; and the cumulative effect of those decisions can be absolutely massive in its impact on lived existence, even though each individual choice can seem extremely small or even invisible to the person making it. So talking about if "men were gone" is more of a thought experiment to examine the effect that those structures have, as carried out by the individual choices that men make. It's not about some kind of fundamental curse inherent to maleness.
That's not to say that all men are necessarily good, either. Men are still individual human beings. Feminism doesn't rely on men all being evil as a general class of human being in order to operate. And structures and socialization aren't permanent - you can recognize the existence of those structures, you can recognize the patriarchal concepts in your own mind, you can critically examine yourself, and you can change the way that you think and act. And ultimately, we can do all of that on a societal level. That's really the point of saying that none of these things are intrinsic.
I think there are good reasons for people of any gender to be feminists, and I also hope you get any help you need to live a really happy, decent life.
