I met two people at a Christmas party and thought they were a really cute couple, being all cuddly and sweet the whole time. Afterwards I found out they weren't a couple and had only met each other at that party, and suddenly the way they'd acted with each other started to creep me out a little. After learning that, I automatically got the feeling that the man had initiated everything with this woman he'd just met and she had played along to avoid causing a scene. I don't know if I'm overreacting. Is this a more rational assumption than that they both were acting voluntarily because they'd hit it off together immediately?

Can't know without asking one or both of them. And some people just do, naturally, hit it off.

Not without further evidence than what you've described here, no.

I think it says more about you that you immediately assumed the worst of the man and that she's a poor waif who can't defend her delicate self tbh. It's possible they just met and had an instant attraction. Rare, but happens.

I have been on the other side of this - someone assumed I was in a relationship with a guy I met that night. He was friendly, we were chatting and sharing a blanket because it was cold outside. Some people just make you feel comfortable with that kind of thing right away, I think.

Maybe she was the one being touchy-feely and he was the the one just playing along? I've seen it happen. Or maybe he liked it and was being touchy-feely back? Who knows.
